/web: Microsoft’s New Site For Web Professionals

The newly launched /web is a site where web professionals can find articles, events, and relevant info from all over the internet - not just Microsoft.com pages. There are different categories to explore, including the following areas: inspiration, methods, business, events, blogs, and products, each with their own RSS feed. The categories can also be found at the top of the home page for easy browsing. An Editor's Picks section selects some of the most popular and interesting content and there’s an RSS feed for that section, too. I’m not even a web professional, but I’ve already found some great content on the site, including this article on Drupal, this one on Ubiquity, and this one on social networking.

Integrate the Web Into Office With KallOut

A new program called KallOut works with all Microsoft Office products to let you search the web right from within Office. After installing KallOut, an icon will appear in your system tray to show that it’s running. To use the program, just double-click or select any word or phrase from within any Microsoft Office program (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Notepad, WordPad), Adobe PDFs, Facebook, even IE and Firefox. You’ll then see a small KallOut icon appear. From here, you can access a small pop-up menu that displays several different search options. You can choose from several different search providers including Google, Live Search, Yahoo Search, and Technorati. You can also search reference sites like Wikipedia and Dictionary.com. videos on YouTube, or photos on Flickr, and more.

What’s really interesting about KallOut is that it essentially brings the power of the web into traditional Microsoft Office software. One of the perks of using online office suites is that, by their very nature, they’re connected to the real-time information of the web. So for example, if you needed to pull up a stock quote in a spreadsheet, it was possible. However, for many people, especially those using Office software in a traditional business environment, the web office suites are just not robust enough, rich enough, or powerful enough for the tasks at hand. But with a simple add-in like KallOut, you no longer have to choose between easy access to the live web or feature-rich software – you can have both.

Nächste Woche findet die Webinale in Karlsruhe statt. Ich bin dabei, um Popfly und Photosynth zu promoten.

Am Vorabend von der Webinale (25. Mai) findet ein Girl Geek Dinner statt. Ein zweites Girl Geek Dinner findet im München am 4. Juni statt. Ich bin auf beide Veranstaltungen dabei.

Girl Geek Dinners sind international bereits etabliert, in Deutschland noch neu. Das Konzept basiert auf den London Girl Geek Dinners von Sarah Blow. Ein Girl Geek ist per Definition „eine weibliche Person mit Interesse an Technologie, insbesondere an Computern und Neuen Medien. Allerdings nicht zwangsläufig aus strikt technischer Perspektive, sondern die auch vor allem Technologie als Hilfsmittel sehen und keine Angst davor haben.“ Ein Girl Geek Dinner (GGD) ist ein Event bei dem diese Frauen die Chance haben sich auszutauschen, voneinander zu lernen und Frauen kennen zu lernen, die es in der IT „geschafft“ haben. Girl Geek Dinner sind nicht zwangsläufig „100% Frauen, keine Männer!“-Events, sondern Events an denen Frauen auf Augenhöhe teilnehmen und mindestens 50% der Teilnehmer stellen: Männer sind herzlich eingeladen, aber nur wenn sie von einer Frau mitgebracht werden. ReMIX SEA 07 Web 2.0 Panel (Full)

James Seng, Jeff Ooi, Kevin Lim, Lucian Teo and Chew Choon Keat held a fantastic panel discussion at ReMIX SEA 07 last week on the meaning of Web 2.0 in South East Asia.

The guys discussed their views on what the term "Web 2.0" means to them and how it applies to the web scene in Singapore and Malaysia.

Each of the five panelists discussed the topic from slightly different view points which resulted in a very interesting and diverse conversation.

Chew Choon Keat is the founder of two local startups - SharedCopy.com and rssfwd.com and an active member of the Singapore Ruby Brigade

Web 2.0 Expo: What’s the takeaway?

Last week the O’Reilly machine cranked up a storm in downtown San Francisco, pulling as much of the light of the internet as possible into the first annual Web 2.0 Singularity Expo. Moscone West was washed over with a sea of people anxious to be a part of the conversation around how everyone can be a part of the post-bubble phenomenon. We attended simply to see how the ecosystem has matured since the term was coined back in 2004. Over the next few days leading up to MIX07, we’ll go in-depth on our own ideas about Web 2.0, but for the moment, enjoy some of the photos we snapped while walking round.
