Popfly Game Creator Gets New Features

The Popfly team has just added a bunch of new features to the Popfly Game Creator beta. The game creator is now more social with the addition of profile pages for users that show off people’s projects, friends, recent activity and more. You can also see anyone’s favorite projects and subscribe to either those favs or their entire project list via an RSS feed.

New badges also bring a more social element to the Popfly community and they make it more fun to participate, too. The badges offer awards for being a great player, being active in the community, being the first to play someone’s game, and many other things.

Game creators themselves will be pleased to find all sorts of new tools in this latest update like the ability to insert images or video into a scene, preview scenes, jump to any scene in the Play editor, and more. Advanced game authors will also find some additional features like the new scroll wheel and tab support in the XAML & JavaScript editor, for example.

Play The Olympics With Popfly

The Popfly team has put together a handful of Olympic-themed games in honor of the Summer Games occurring now in Beijing. There are ten games in all included archery, boxing, diving, gymnastics, long jump, soccer, synchronized swimming, track & field, weightlifting, and even torch lighting! Well, that last one isn’t really a sport, but you get the idea. The games, like most of the gaming content built with Popfly, are for the casual gamer who’s looking to kill some time or just relax and take a break by playing a lightweight, easy, and fun game. Next to each of the games listed, there is a link to customize the game, so if you want to tweak it to make it your own, you have that option, too. You can play all the games from popfly.com/sports.

For more on Popfly Game Creator don't miss This Week on Channel 9. Jacqueline Russel, Lead Project Manager for Popfly, talks about Popfly Game Creator and Adam Nathan from the Popfly team goes over building a 2D side scroller.

I played around with it this morning and it's really simple - so if you're not a dev, don't worry about it - give it a try. There is a function to upload pictures to Popfly, but I was referencing photos I uploaded to Skydrive with no problem. Remember, if you use PNGs for your images you can have transparent backgrounds.

Alguém lembra do Popfly? Ele é um conjunto de ferramentas no estilo WYSIWYG para criação de mashups e Web sites. Como mandatório no mundo Web 2.0, ele também tem uma comunidade própria onde seus usuários votam pelos melhores Web sites e mash-ups, compartilham suas criações e comentam livremente. O bacana do Popfly é que ele é super fácil de usar e seus mashups podem ser exportados para Sidebar do Windows Vista, para o Facebook, para o Digg, para o Reddit, ou até mesmo como iframe para incorporar em sites. Meu amigo René de Paula adora o Popfly e usa-o bastante. Veja um exemplo legal aqui no blog dele de como é possível agregar vários fontes de informações ou serviços dentro de um gadget que você incorpora no set site.

Bom, a novidade saindo do Maker Faire hoje é que o time do Popfly liberou uma nova função que é sensacional - Popfly Game Creator. Além de criar mashups e Web sites, agora você também pode criar jogos simples e divertidos dentro do Popfly. Você não precisa saber nada de programação nem de design (pra vocês eu recomendo o XNA) para criar um jogo. Em 3 passos você consegue criar seu primeira obra prima de vídeo game.

Selecione os personagens que você quer no seu jogo. Há 400 personagens diferentes disponíveis em categorias como pessoas, veículos, super poderes, e outras. Se não achar algo que agrade, você pode criar e importar para o Popfly.

Escolha o cenário. Há vários cenários para escolher e também efeitos sonoros para criar um clima bacana no jogo. Depois você posiciona os seus personagens nesse cenário.

Dê vida ao seu jogo. Agora você especifica alguns comportamentos que os personagens e o cenário terão. Com a interface WYSIWYG do Popfly, é fácil de determinar interações, eventos, e movimentos sem ter que programar uma sequer linha de código. E para quem quiser maior controle, é possível customizar essas ações com o editor embutido de JavaScript.

Já tem um vídeo (em inglês) online para quem está curioso. E a equipe vai lançar mais vídeos tutoriais ao longo dessa semana.

O Game Creator deve entrar no ar até o final do dia 2 de maio.
