HP’s New TouchSmart PCs

On the Windows Experience blog, Brandon has the scoop on the next generation of HP TouchSmart PCs: the IQ804 and IQ816. These new PCs are bigger than the previous models (25.5” vs. 22”) and, like the older ones, they let you shine ambient lighting on your keyboard. However, now, you can change the color of that light. As someone who wanted to purchase the HP MediaSmart WHS just for the Easter egg where you can customize the lighting scheme, I have to admit this makes the new TouchSmart PCs look pretty sexy to me. But those pretty lights aren’t all the new PCs have to offer: they also come with a pocket media drive for portable media, built-in TV tuners, giant hard drives (804 = 500GB, 816=750GB), a wall-mounting kit, a Blu-ray drive, screens with an image resolution of 1920x1200 pixels, and, of course, a natural user interface that works via touch.

My Movies Plugin, Now For Home Server

The upcoming My Movies plugin for Windows Home Server has a lot of people excited. Already available for Windows Media Center users, the plugin will soon allow Home Server users to organize their extensive movie collections and use their Home Server as more of a media server. According to a new post on the We Got Served blog, the plugin will function as a standard server for My Movies clients, will include an automated “Disc Copier,” will automatically monitor movie folders added to or located on a WHS share, and will function as a metadata provider without the need for a My Movies client for Microsoft DVD library, Niveus Movie Library, Open Media Library, Media Portal, and hopefully soon XBMC. The plugin isn’t available in its final form just yet, but if you just can’t wait to try it out, a pre-release version is now available for download from here.

Life|ware Launches New Media Servers

At this year's CEDIA EXPO, the show put on by the trade association of home theater companies, Lifeware launched a brand-new, all-in-one, Lifemedia Server (LMS). This new server combines Windows Media Center with a 5.1 surround-sound amplifier and ZigBee control technology all within a single box. The LMS-170 line of media servers with ZigBee built in will allow the servers to communicate directly with Centralite's JetStream products, including dimmers, modules and switches. Whereas before they had to install a bridge in order to get the systems talking, the new servers will have direct communication.

There will be two models of the new server expected in the 1st quarter of 2009: the LMS-175 which will support dual Cable Cards (less than $4000) and the LMS-172 which has dual NTSC/ATSC tuners but no Cable Card support. No word on its price yet, only that it will be the less expensive of the two.

A recent post on LifeHacker mentioned a little program called MPlayer, which allows you to play nearly any media file (like RealAudio/Video, Ogg, & M4A) on your Windows Mobile 5 or 6 phone. However, the post mentioned the program was a rough port of a Linux version of the app, and was somewhat of a killer on processor (and thereby, battery) usage. However, a commenter mentioned another program called Conduits Pocket Player, which they liked better, so I thought it was worth checking out. The Conduits Pocket Player, although not free (it's $19.95), supports all Windows Mobile devices and offers a myriad of features. The Pocket Player supports MP3, WMA, WMV1 2, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, WAV, Protected WMA, u-Law, A-Law, AU, &ADPCM WAV formats. It also has a Media Browser menu system with touch scrolling & gesture support; a Media Library with ratings, an auto-imports up to 1000+ tracks; an internet radio web guide for finding mp3 blogs & podcasts; voicemail playback as WAV attachments which integrates with your inbox; a skinnable player with visualizations and album art support; a playlist manager; bookmarks; a sleep timer; and so much more! If you're looking to do more with your smartphone, this looks pretty cool!

AMAZING OLD TECHNOLOGY

Term „amazing technology" usually translates to „latest technology". But it doesn't have to be necessarily this way in all cases. Let me share a story I had experienced recently.
Assoc. Prof. Michael Meadows - my former lecturer and also a Head of Media School at the Griffith University in Australia came over to Europe to do his research. I was pleased by his choice to include Czech media in his work and also about the fact that we could meet again.
Michael's focus was on public media therefore I took him for an excursion to the Czech Television and also to the Czech Radio. Director of one of its stations - Radio Praha (broadcasts in 6 languages) Miroslav Krupicka and also chief editor Gerald Schubert were very well prepared and we'd spend several hours together in the end.
According to the profesor the equipment of all newsrooms, studios and editing rooms were very similar to those ones in Australia but what really grabbed his attention was - apart from excellent language skills of Mr Schubert (native Austrian able to speak six languages including perfect Czech) - a paternoster. This is a unique cyclic elevator and Michael has never seen anything like that before.
Gerald Schubert has found a story written by one of radio's reporters about it for us. You might find the story behind the paternoster amazing as well.

Imagine (if you will) a visionary, a leader, a true artist with his sights on the future. Well, this is Josh Harris. Known as the Warhol of webcasting, his latest creation allows anyone on the net to be a director of their own internet show. I was fortunate enough to work with Josh in my fledgling years of internet broadcasting back at Pseudo in the N.Y.C. You Witness News launches from Yahoo

Per yesterday's NY Times article, Yahoo launched their citizen journalism site You Witness News this morning. After signing in with your Yahoo! ID, you can upload just about any movie file that weighs less than 100 megs. After providing some brief description, tagging, and date information, the video will go live. You can also connect a Flickr account to the site and upload still images through Flickr. The media that gets contributed to this new site will be available to the editors of both Yahoo News and Reuters for use in appropriate articles.

Disney-ABC President Anne Sweeney understands piracy, "serves a need..."

We’ve all been witness to the disconnect between the people and their leadership, and nowhere is this divide more apparent than between Internet users and content providers. Digital music piracy, DRM-crippled television, and overpriced underwhelming motion pictures have left their marks on all of us. Through the years the media companies have dragged their heels, kicking and screaming towards new technology.

Yesterday during her keynote at MIPCOM, (the world’s audiovisual content market, dontchyaknow) co-chair of Disney Media Networks and President of the Disney-ABC Television Group Anne Sweeney proved that even media leaders can adapt:

“We understand now that piracy is a business model. It exists to serve a need in the market for consumers who want TV content on demand. Pirates compete the same way we do – through quality, price, and availability. We don’t like the model but we realize it’s competitive enough to make it a major competitor going forward.”

Wow. Does this sort of illuminating speak mean that we’re one step further away from incarcerating those of us who are fans of your content, just not of your distribution model? Sure this is but one step forward down a long road, but for now Ms. Sweeney, you are officially 10’s Magical Media Mistress!

Well, it's all about to become real. Photosynth is an incredible new application takes multiple photographs of any location and merges them together to create a interactive 3D landscape. In the not too distant future we all might be able to walk the globe...through Photosynth. Is that cool or what?
