MIX08: The Next Web Now

MIX08 is a web technology conference where developers, designers and business professionals can engage in a conversation about new technologies, commerce, media, content, services, and security. In its third year, this year's conference will be held March 5-7 at the Venetian in Las Vegas. Subjects like Silverlight, IE, ASP.NET, Expression, Windows Live, and more will be discussed in sessions led by industry experts for designers, developers and business strategists. Additionally, some featured discussion topics will include How can I extend my content and services into the living room?; How can I protect my users from phishers and pharmers?; How can I develop and debug AJAX applications quickly and efficiently?; and How can I effectively monetize RSS? I'm sure you've all seen and heard plenty about the gaming conference, E for All. I've posted a few videos here, here and here about the games and content on display there- but what I really wanted to see was what people were saying about a gaming conference at the Staples Center, in a post E3 era. Needless to say, there were some pretty big shoes to fill.

MIX07 Silverlight demos show off tomorrow's web

The Microsoft MIX conference is in full swing in a little city in Nevada right now, and our sister site Visit MIX07 has been Joshua Allen’s soapbox to bring the show beyond Vegas. The technological marvel of the show has been Silverlight. The CBS Digital Media group has built an application for media consumption that could aptly be described as FutureTV. Moving through user-generated content that includes rich metadata is a seamless viewing experience, even with targeted advertising integrated. The kids here have worked long and hard to provide incredible and futuristic online experiences. The Netflix video-on-demand player was combines your online experience with movie-viewing in a way that is simply amazing. Even Major League Baseball has got into the business in an attempt to provide baseball fans with an aggressive online experience. The way in which MLB.com shows off live games has changed drastically since they started in 2002 thanks to Microsoft. The new Silverlight MLB site player provides the smoothest presentation of baseball’s ocean of statistics and multiple simultaneous sporting events anywhere.

Web 2.0 Expo: What’s the takeaway?

Last week the O’Reilly machine cranked up a storm in downtown San Francisco, pulling as much of the light of the internet as possible into the first annual Web 2.0 Singularity Expo. Moscone West was washed over with a sea of people anxious to be a part of the conversation around how everyone can be a part of the post-bubble phenomenon. We attended simply to see how the ecosystem has matured since the term was coined back in 2004. Over the next few days leading up to MIX07, we’ll go in-depth on our own ideas about Web 2.0, but for the moment, enjoy some of the photos we snapped while walking round.

Guitar Hero II - Coming to the Xbox 360! :) Gaming Exclusivity...Good or Bad?

This makes me really, really happy. At X06 in Barcelona they announced that Guitar Hero II is making it's way to the Xbox 360. There was a part of me that was nervous when Activision bought Red Octane a while back, but with decisions like this. I get excited. They haven't announced too much information. It will obviously get its own controller. It will have some exclusive songs downloadable through marketplace. We all want to know about online play, but they aren't revealing anything about that just yet. But this brings up a question about exclusivity in the gaming industry. Thank goodness Guitar Hero II won't be exclusive now. Is exclusivity good for gamers or bad for gamers? As an Xbox fan do I care that PS2 players can't play HALO? Should God of War expand its audience to the GameCube? I think as a game developer you want as many people playing your games as possible...but obviously the consoles pay out some serious cash for exclusivity. Thoughts?
