Bill Gates predicted a computer in every home and on every desk....and now it seems he can go ahead and add "in every vehicle". We did some great coverage of MS Auto at CES and I stopped by for another chat with Velle to see what's new- and when we can have it!

The price of gasoline just seems to be going up and up and up, but there are online tools to help you find the lowest prices in your area. One of these tools is available right from MSN Auto. On the gas prices page, MSN Auto displays the prices for gas in your zip code by using data that is updated daily via the Oil Pricing Information Service (OPIS). More than 90,000 stations across the country are covered so you can find the best prices. (via Click)

Microsoft Auto at CES 2008

This was by far the best part of the Bill Gates keynote for me and probably the highlight of the show overall. Microsoft Auto showed of 2 new great technologies to make all of our driving experiences more pleasant with a focus on the Sync My Ride technology. I can't wait to get this in my car. Not only does it offer voice activated features with your wireless MP3 player and your bluetooth mobile phone- but you will be blown away at the excellent text messaging options. Well, at least I was. Take a look and you be the judge.

Microsoft Automotive Business Unit wins Frost & Sullivan Award

I keep telling friends that I talk to that the Microsoft Auto products on the market change the way you think about communication and the way you access your music and entertainment data in the car. Of course, I'm not the only one who's noticed. The Microsoft Automotive Business Unit has won a Frost & Sullivan award for the work they've done with European manufacturers:

The 2007 Frost & Sullivan Customer Service Innovation Award in the European automotive software market is presented to Microsoft Automotive Business Unit in recognition of its exceptional customer service and value-added offerings, based on its Microsoft Auto platform.

“Through the Microsoft Auto platform, Microsoft provides the most advanced, innovative and simple to use in-vehicle infotainment and multimedia solutions,” said Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Niveditha Srinivasan. “Through this platform, partners can quickly react to consumer requirements and develop offerings to deliver improved customer relationships coupled with enhanced understanding and effective fulfillment of customer needs.”

NJection's Live Search Speedtrap Map

NJection has a Live Search map mashup that shows you where some of the most popular speedtraps around the world are. Although editorially we are against what one might call "Jeff Sandquist driving", categorically we hope that each of you update this map with the most current information available so that we all may be fully informed drivers.

In the future, NJection plans on creating a version for uploading to mobile GPS devices and GPS enabled phones. I'd just be happy to have a version that works on top of the traffic congestion map on Live Search for Windows Mobile.

At Maker Faire I met up with Damien Stolarz, author of Car PC Hacks, and he introduced me to the all-in-one mobile electronics package StreetDeck. StreetDeck delivers all the extras you want (GPS, Music, DVD, the works!) and need in your car, so you can go from zero to loaded with one installation. It's pretty sweet...

CalCars... Taking a Prius Hybrid to 100+ MPG!

So Laura heads to Maker Faire and gets indepth information on those ridiculously high gas prices. Okay, well kind of. She talks to the founder of CalCars and learns how they can convert a Toyota Prius so that it can be charged using your household electricity ... power that is a whole lot cheaper than the gas a normal Prius uses to generate all of its electric power. Learn how they make this work, and how much easier it would be for Toyota to make their hybrids work this way in the first place. Enjoy! Oh and Laura's not so bad either.

Rolling With Counts Kustoms

The one thing you can't fault 10 for is having a wide range of interest. I originally got hooked on the custom chopper scene with Discovery Channel's "Biker Build-Off" series. The winner of the first build-off, Jesse James, got his own show and soon the Teutel's were lighting up the screen as well.

Convincing Jeff that there would be a technology angle (it's in there, I swear), I got the green light to interview one of the biggest hitters in the Custom bike world today: Counts Kustoms of Las Vegas. It was amazing to see how it's done up close. And, for the record, I've never interviewed a nicer, more genuine bunch of guys.
