Just In Time For The Holidays: A Red Xbox Controller

Now available for a limited time only, Xbox 360 controllers are going to come in red, too…and just in time for the holidays! The red controllers with black accents will be available in U.S., Canada, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand and Asia for $64.99. They will be sold together in a bundle with the Play & Charge Kit and red rechargeable battery which lets you wirelessly game from up to 30 feet away and for up to 25 hours of gameplay on one charge. Pretty cool, but I have to admit, I like Engadget’s suggestion: sell the green one, too!

Easter may be traditionally known for chocolate and adorable oversized rodents but when Major Nelson posted the details of next month’s Xbox 360 Dashboard update, he officially bucked the trend. The biggest news is certainly this summer’s QWERTY keypad which will go wonderfully with the Windows Live Messenger integration. The svelte rubberized keypad will plug beautifully into your existing controller. Software updates include controls for progressively downloaded videos, and the ability for the console to shut itself off when it’s finished downloading your HD videos. We’ll also be treated to a new blade dedicated to Xbox LIVE content and a redesigned Achievement notification pop-ups and various other bits.

Racing in Style with the Xbox 360 Wireless Wheel

Jesse and I visited the Xbox buildings again this week, this time to check out the soon-to-be-released Xbox wheel. Dennis Tom is the Program Manager for the wheel and he told us everything there was to know, including some neat info about the automotive design cues that went into it.

This new controller is sweet... and I've got to say... once you've tried it, going back to driving in Need for Speed: Most Wanted last night without a wheel was truly a disappointing experience (not that I didn't have fun... I beat #10 on the blacklist last night!). I've already started the process of convincing my wife that we need this wheel in our family room, so perhaps by the time it comes out (Dennis talks timelines in the video, but I believe it is in the second half of November) I'll be able to make it happen.

And just like the wireless headset... this will work with your PC as a wireless wheel if you get the wireless receiver...

Jesse and I headed over to the Xbox buildings and interviewed Deb Louis about the new Xbox 360 Wireless Headset. This slick little device connects with the console using the same 2.4ghz protocol as the controllers and frees you from wires completely... great for when you put the controller, walk away from the TV, only to have the headset pull your controller off the table! Oh, and even though it isn't mentioned... look for Windows support when the Wireless Receiver comes out... PC voice chat without any wires!
