Live Labs Shadow Box on the Surface

Now this is cool. Jeff Weir and John Lynn work in the Microsoft Live Labs team (that's the group that created Photosynth). They also have a couple of Surface units in their office. So the two of them came up with an idea to build a little application called Shadow Box (or unofficially "nightmare box") that 'burns' in and out images of what the infrared camera inside the surface sees. The end result is both awesome and spooky! Check out the video of Shadow Box in action.

Sphere multi-touch computing

Just when you thought the Surface was the coolest thing since sliced bread... enter the Sphere! This product is still in proto-type mode but even at this stage, you can't help but be impressed. At the Microsoft Research Faculty Summit I grabbed some one on one time with Hrvoje Benko, the lead on this project and found out all the details. It's just so cool, enjoy.

Kyle Warnick from the Microsoft Surface team was in Las Vegas yesterday for the launch of the Rio iBar Surface units.
Kyle and team had their video camera with them and filmed this great demo of the new Surface apps in action for Channel 10.
Apart from fun, multiplayer mini-games and informational applications Harrah's have created a unique Surface experience by incorporating video camera's in the ceiling of the bar that allow you to (amongst other things) experiment with social interaction and the ordering of adult beverages,.. what a mix!

Microsoft Surface at the Rio in Las Vegas; Your Virtual Wingman

Harrah’s Entertainment and Microsoft are unveiling a new interactive entertainment experience with the deployment of six Microsoft Surface units at the iBar in Las Vegas’ Rio Hotel and Casino.

Guests in the iBar will be able to play games, order customized drinks for themselves (or that special someone across the room) and send photos and messages to each other via strategically placed video cameras that can be controlled by the Surface units.

The iBar Microsoft Surface units will feature eight brand new interactive applications:

• Flirt Vegas style by adding a hip ultralounge vibe to the flirting experience. This application allows guests to create an exciting new way to chat and meet people from one Surface to another. Strategically placed video cameras at each Surface add even more energy to the action, allowing guests to interact with old friends, flirt with new acquaintances, and take and send photos across the lounge.

• Mixologists are inspired to create and order their own signature cocktails for themselves or to send to that special someone across the room using Surface and Harrah’s intuitive food and beverage application.

• Hip-notic describes how guests will feel when kicking back to find and view the latest and most popular online videos with their friends on Surface.

• Head Games are taken to a whole new level with Harrah’s creative suite of play-for-fun games. With the unique Surface interface, Harrah’s adds an exciting new take on some old favorites such as High Roller bowling, Dissed multiplayer pickup pinball, and a Last Call musical memory game that encourage the whole group to play together. Leaderboards add excitement as guests compete with one another to see who can climb to the top of the scoreboard. In addition to Harrah’s unique applications and play-for-fun games, the Surface units also feature a photos application and a virtual concierge application developed by Microsoft that Harrah’s customized for its environment.

• See and Be Scene is what guests can do as they tour all of Harrah’s Vegas properties and explore attractions in Vegas without leaving their seat at the iBar.

• Virtual Vegas aptly describes how guests will take a virtual walk down the Las Vegas strip on Surface, letting their fingers be the guide. Guests will be able to get information on the latest events and attractions at all Harrah’s properties throughout Vegas.

Anunciamos hoje o segundo deployment (disponibilidade comercial) do Surface. O primeiro cliente a receber foi a AT&T que já tem o Surface para seus clientes conhecerem os telefones celulares da rede.

O segundo cliente é o Harrah's Entertainment que é o dono do Rio Casino em Las Vegas. O i-Bar desse cassino contará com algumas mesas Surface a partir de hoje. As mesas Surface desse cassino permitem, entre outras coisas, jogos multiplayers, navegação em mapas do Virtual Earth, cardápio e pedido de bebidas, integração com as câmeras do i-Bar, e, algo bem interessante, uma paquera virtual entre mesas - uma mesa pode mandar recados para outras mesas. Bill Gates Demos TouchWall - Like Surface for the Office

The 12th annual Microsoft CEO Summit was held May 13-15th. At this forum, business leaders meet up to discuss the most pressing issues affecting global business today. This year's topics included decoding financial markets, establishing cultures of execution, and exploring how the Internet will evolve over the next five years. The keynote speech was by Bill Gates. One of the highlights of the speech was when he demoed a brand-new piece of technology called the TouchWall.

He described the TouchWall as an "intelligent whiteboard." The screen that had been behind him showing a static image was actually the TouchWall itself, ready to be used. After discussing natural computer interfaces like touchscreen tablet PCs, Surface, and Microsoft RoundTable, he then walked up the TouchWall and touched it to begin the demo. Like Surface, the TouchWall uses scanning cameras, but here they are located at the bottom of the device.

Using finger gestures, like swooshes across the screen and other now common movements to expand and shrink items, he began zooming in and out on what was a big, multimedia laden document, of which the static image that had been there before was only a small part.

Gates then showed how you could zoom in on a Word document and flip through the pages, zoom out then back in on a Powerpoint presentation, then out again and back in to watch a video. It was a very similar looking experience as to what Silverlight's Deep Zoom functionality provides.

In addition to just moving the document on the screen and zooming in and out, you could also use a pen-like feature that lets you draw on the TouchWall with only your finger, something you could use to circle items for emphasis, for example.

Gates also said that the whiteboard was a "natural extension for Office," and that the hardware "wouldn't be that expensive." He hinted that not only was the Office group working on it.

This definitely has potential. I know at one of my previous jobs, we had a semi-intelligent whiteboard that would let you take pictures of what you had put up there, but thanks to a crappy driver and confusing software, no one ever really used it for anything but a traditional whiteboard. Instead, everyone just plugged in laptops to a projector and launched a PowerPoint. The TouchWall was so much more interactive and visually stimulating, but even better, it looked darn easy. You just touch it.

Microsoft Surface Firefly Game

Firefly was developed as a simple, fun game which was used to test Surface's multi-touch feature. Using all your fingers, you corral the fireflies into your glass jar, but, at the same time, you can also squash a neighbor's fireflies. You just have to be careful not to squash your own! To see Firefly in action, you can watch a video of it here. The game was never intended to be anything more than a test program for Surface, but it looks pretty fun. Maybe this will be included when Surface becomes available to the consumer?

O MIX é o evento onde a Microsoft mostra as suas novas tecnologias para a Web e para designers. Ontem já saiu uma das primeiras notícias: Silverlight para celulares Nokia até final do ano. O Silverlight é um pequeno plug-in para os navegadores Web (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari) que permite a criação de Web sites ricos em interatividade e interface. Ele também permite vídeos de excelente qualidade.

Meu colega René de Paula está no MIX esse ano e está blogando bastante. Ele até criou uns gadgets com Popfly para centralizar as informações do Twitter, Blip.tv, Flickr entre outros. Confiram o vídeo do Surface que ele gravou clicando aqui.

Microsoft Surface Piano

When Steve Clayton happened upon a Surface computer in Redmond, he didn't just play with it, he filmed himself playing with it! And it introduced me to a Surface app I had not seen before - the "Grand Piano." This application simulates a piano keyboard while showing off the Surface's ability to handle multi-input. The app came from an existing app created by the Expression Blend folks as an example of WPF and was tweaked to work on Surface. New MS Surface Apps at CES 2008

Bill Gates showed a cool new demo of Microsoft Surface as part of his CES 2008 key note presentation (at the 27:00 mark). In it he customized a virtual snowboard with decals and a signature then saved it to his Windows Mobile device and Windows Live Spaces site.
We sat down with Mark Bolger from the Surface group for a more indepth look at Microsoft Surface following on from our exclusive "first look" back in May.

Mark took us through a quick recap of the fundamentals of the Microsoft Surface technology and ran through the full version of Bill's "Snowboard" demo plus the "virtual wine steward" scenario which was not shown during the keynote.

Robbie Bach @ CES 2008

Each year Microsoft's connected entertainment vision gets better and better. By now, you've seen the broader picture - Media Centers in the living room, Extenders in the bedroom, Xbox's in the playroom, Windows Mobile on the hip, and Sync in the car. Making all this work, and work more seamlessly in the future, is no small task of course, and the person charged with making it all work is Robbie Bach.

Robbie invited us over this morning to talk about what we can expect from the Connected Entertainment experience in 2008 as well as what's coming in the future (yes, Surface computers in your house.) The first digital decade is just the start.

Dell's multi-touch tablet

Multi-touch, which started at Bell Labs nearly 25 years ago, is the hot technology this year and without a doubt one of the technologies I get asked about most by family and friends. So obviously there are a lot of companies working on multi-touch products. A couple weeks ago, Charles Torre took us inside Microsoft Research to see some of the work being done with multi-touch laptops.

But I was still pleasantly surprised when Dell announced their new Latitude XT multi-touch tablet at Oracle's OpenWorld (video via JKKMobile), and with products coming "in a couple of months", it looks like they're going to be first to market with this technology, congratulations Dell. The question now is what apps will ship for multi-touch? Things are getting very interesting and we'll keep you informed as details come out.
