Photosynthillä alkuun pääsy on helppoa:

Ihan aluksi, ota muutama tusina digikuvia, noin 20 – 300 vaaditaan riippuen paikan tai kuvattavan kohteen koosta. Ota kuvat hieman limittäin toisiinsa nähden, useasta eri paikasta ja kulmasta.

Seuraavaksi, lataa pieni sovellus tietokoneellesi osoitteesta www.photosynth.com.

Kollaasiota, ”synthiä”, voidaan tarkastella mistä tahansa tuetusta tietokoneesta, jossa on laajakaistainen internet-yhteys.

On his blog, Long Zheng shares with us an amazing video out of Microsoft Research that focuses on a new immersive 3D technology for manipulating digital photos. The technology, which appears to be an advancement of an older technology called Photo Tourism, allows for browsing through photo collections in 3D. In the video, the photos used to demonstrate the technology in action are taken from the flickr website. However, the technology could be used with a collection of images out of your own personal photo collection, too.

Like Photosynth, photos of the same object or location are stitched together, but this new technology goes beyond that to allow for a 3D model of the scene through seamless transitions between the photos as you move through them. In addition, the system also corrects the color balance and stabilizes the transitions as you zoom, rotate, and move through the images. With this system, you can navigate through the photos, zoom in and out, select different orbits, view both daytime or nighttime photos, and so much more. This technology doesn’t seem to have a real name yet – both the video and the website are simply titled “Finding Paths through the World’s Photos.”

This is the sort of thing that’s kind of hard to explain – it has to be seen to be believed. Check it out:

On the website, you can view the video, download the paper, and even download the source code.

<evnet:views>9964</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/23281/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>If you thought Photosynth was cool, you haven’t seen anything yet! Before the world went digital, your pictures were stored in hardbound photo albums, or, if you were a creative type, you dressed up your albums with backgrounds, stickers, text bubbles, cut-outs, shapes, drawings, and other mementos. These albums were no mere repositories of photos - they were true scapbooks. Now that everyone takes digital photos, our photo albums have moved online. Although there are plenty of online storage spaces for collecting and sharing photos, the creativity and fun of scrapbooking had been somewhat lost. For many people, that creativity was channeled into making online slideshows using services like Slide, RockYou, or Photobucket. These services do offer a lot of customization techniques, but they still aren't quite the same as making a real scrapbook-like page. However, a service called Scrapblog, which launched earlier this year, brings back much of the fun of creating scrapbooks by letting you make customized and personal scrapbook-like photo pages. You can begin using the service right away, with no need to register unless you want to save your work, so it's easy to get started with making your own page. The service offers a wide assortment of themes to use, or you can start with a blank page and make it your own. You can add in various backgrounds, frames, shapes, text, and, just like real scrapbooks, you can add "stickers" too. The objects can be resized, rotated, overlayed, and hyperlinked and the photos themselves can be edited to have frames, shadows, and other effects. You can even add videos from YouTube to your Scrapblog pages. The individual pages are combined to make up an online photo album that is just as personal and fun as the scrapbooks you made in the past. To see some examples of the extent to which these pages can be customized, check out some of the pictures of scrapblog pages that are featured on the Scrapblog Blog. To learn more, watch the quick online tutorial & then get scrapbooking!

<evnet:views>8951</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://on10.net/20396/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Now that the holidays are over, you may find that you have taken a ton of new photos to share with your family and friends.
