MIX 08 - The Wrap Up Video

So if you're into developing and designing cool web-sites then the annual MIX event in Las Vegas is where you want to be. MIX 08 was stellar as Guy Kawasaki and Steve Ballmer played hardball, Ray Ozzie and Scott Guthrie were part of the keynotes and everybody else partied their basheebees off. MIX isn't your typical Microsoft event as the days aren't only filled with keynotes and sessions but it adds a sprinkle of pop-culture and fun. Na semana passada durante o MIX '08, nosso evento para designers e novas tecnologias Web, anunciamos o beta do Silverlight 2.0, um plug-in que você instala no seu browser para ter funcionalidades mais ricas na Internet. Umas dessas funcionalidades que lançamos é o Deep Zoom, antigamente conhecido como Sea Dragon. O Deep Zoom permite que você "entre" nas suas imagens aproveitando todos aqueles megapixels que a sua câmera digital oferece. Para quem desenvolve para Web, recomendo ler o post (link em breve) do meu colega René de Paula explicando como usar o compositor de Deep Zoom para Silverlight. Confira o vídeo que fiz mostrando como funciona e depois dê uma navegada no site do Hard Rock Café e da empresa que criou esse site, a Vertigo. Para quem quiser testar com suas fotos, o pessoal de Windows Live disponibilizou um site para testar a tecnologia. Basta fazer o upload de suas fotos ou fornecer um feed RSS ou ATOM para puxar fotos de algum serviço.

Só para lembrar, isso já está disponível para seu uso em qualquer página Web que você criar!

Silverlight 2 beta sisältää innovatiivisiä ominaisuuksia kuten Deep Zoom, yli 40 uutta kontrollia ja monipuolise .NET pohjaisen toimintojen luokkakirjastot.

Kaikki kontrollien koodit on saatavissa ns. opensource lisensillä, jolloin niitä voidaan vapaasti käyttää, muokata ja vaikka myydä eteenpäin.

Deep Zoom perustuu Seadragon teknologiaan, jonka avulla voidaan tuoda sovelluksiin joustavia suurien kuvien zoomaus ja liikutusmahdollisuuksia.Tämä toiminnallisuus tuo korkearesoluutiokuvien käyttämisen silverlight sovelluksien luontaiseksi osaksi. Videoiden käsittelyyn tulee uudenlaisia toiminnallisuuksi uusin alustaratkaisujen kanssa kuten dynaamisia kaistan hallintatekniikoita, joiden avulla kyetään optimoimaan siirrettävään videomateriaaliin tarvittavaa kaistaa.

Silverlight sovelluksia voidaan jatkossa tehdä kaikilla .NET kielillä ja tässä vaiheessa tuettuina kielinä on JavaScript, vb.net, iron python, iron ruby.
Visual Studio 2008 tukee mm. XAML:ia ja tyylejä ja tarjoaa täyden tuen intellisense toimintoineen Silverlight sovelluksien rakentamiseen.

Silverlight tulee Windows Mobile ja Nokian S60 Symbian, Series 40 laitteisiin ja Nokian Internet tablet laitteisiin.

Changing jobs: Silverlight "Principal Video Strategist"

Well, I've been a lousy blogger of late, but I've been crazy busy behind the scenes on a number of fronts.

The big news is that I've just finished by first week on Silverlight team as Principal Video Strategist. While this shifts by focus a little from being media format to technology platform centric, I'd been largely focused on Silverlight related projects for the last few months as it was.

Personally, I'm thrilled about this opportunity. I compressed my first video in the fall of 1989, and I've been working in the field full-time since 1995, so I've had a long time to think about where I've wanted the industry and the technology to go. For a long time, the biggest challenge was just delivering high quality video and audio to consumers, and that made getting the codecs and to a lesser degree format and protocols nailed. But the intersection of radically improve bandwidth (A decade ago, we still couldn't assume all users had upgraded to 56K, so we've got a LOT more bits to work with now) and big improvements in codecs (meaning we make each one of those bits count for more) means that we can deliver standard definition quality pretty easily today, with HD downloads working for a big part of the population. And while codecs will continue progressing, and will deliver us welcome improvements in compression efficiency every year. But we've reached the end of the era where big improvements in codecs are going to make a qualitative change in the consumer video experiences. It's really the systems layer which controls what the video can do that I think will be the focus of innoation over the next decade.

We are entering the era of Video on Demand, with new models of IP-delivered video making up an increasing share of video eyeball hours. The next big challenge is how to integrate our great video technologies into broader interactive environments. I've been frustrated that the VOD market, while it has continued to drive up quality dramatically, really hasn't offered interactivity much beyond what we had with VideoCD many years ago. With Silverlight, we have a great foundation to combine rich interactivity with high quality media which hasn't yet been possible in internet video.

I'm here at MIX in Las Vegas this week (I'm teaching the "Encoding Video for Microsoft Silverlight Delivery Scenarios" session at 3:00 on Wednesday), and am looking forward to a lot of great conversations about merging design, interactivity, and media.

There's a lot more news coming out about Silverlight this week, and I'll be blogging here with my take on these from a compressionist's perspective.

The Silverlight and Expression teams have long been a blast to work with, and I'm really jazzed to be formally a part of this now. We're going to be delivering some great stuff that'll delight both content creators and consumers.

I finally noticed that my session from Mix '07 is online - Design in Motion: Video Production Workflow. It includes a full streaming version of the presentation (the PowerPoint/Demos, not me) with my mic feed. I'll warn you - we had an excellent party at Pure the night before so my voice was pretty ragged.

You can also download the .pptx of the presentation, and downloable files (including for Zune and iPod).

It's cool stuff. If anyone's on Mac and can't open a .pptx, let me know and I'll send you a different version.

MIX '07 - The future of Comic Book Reading.

IdentityMine’s mission is to help their customers visualize their software’s potential and build something remarkable. Check out this demonstration of the comic reading experience using the Microsoft Expression suite of design tools. Just as the NY Times Reader project dramatically improves the newspaper reading experience, their Windows Presentation Foundation-based approach to comic reading does the same thing for traditional print-based comic books. You'll also notice that I look alot like Channel 9's Rory Blyth in this clip, it's uncanny.

MIX07 Silverlight demos show off tomorrow's web

The Microsoft MIX conference is in full swing in a little city in Nevada right now, and our sister site Visit MIX07 has been Joshua Allen’s soapbox to bring the show beyond Vegas. The technological marvel of the show has been Silverlight. The CBS Digital Media group has built an application for media consumption that could aptly be described as FutureTV. Moving through user-generated content that includes rich metadata is a seamless viewing experience, even with targeted advertising integrated. The kids here have worked long and hard to provide incredible and futuristic online experiences. The Netflix video-on-demand player was combines your online experience with movie-viewing in a way that is simply amazing. Even Major League Baseball has got into the business in an attempt to provide baseball fans with an aggressive online experience. The way in which MLB.com shows off live games has changed drastically since they started in 2002 thanks to Microsoft. The new Silverlight MLB site player provides the smoothest presentation of baseball’s ocean of statistics and multiple simultaneous sporting events anywhere.

The Las Vegas PussyCat Dolls to perform at MIX 07!

MIX is one of the biggest annual conferences Microsoft throws and PURE Nightclub is no doubt the hottest venue in Las Vegas. On top of all that excitement, let's throw the Las Vegas *Cat Dolls into the..well, uh...MIX and you've got one HOT attendee party. I spoke with the lead singer and dance captain right before they performed and they let me know what their days are like, what their internet life is like and how excited they are to take the stage at the MIX attendee party.
