Digital Media Boot Camp

Finally a summer camp for tech kids! The three week digital media boot camp took place at the Great Northern Way Campus in Vancouver this summer and these kids had a blast. I talk to Magy Seif El-Nasr assistant at Simon Fraser University to get all the details.

Composer, songwriter, sound designer, producer, musical director, and performer in almost any genre of music imaginable, for over two hundred live and digital media productions in the past 20 years, Patrick Pennefather(BFA,MFA) is a specialist for the Masters of Digital Media Program @ Great Northern Way Campus in Vancouver. Also, as composer in residence and adjunct professor of Sound Design in the Theatre, Film and Creative Writing Department at the University of British Columbia, his mission is to teach up and coming digital media producers the value of integrating music and sound in all stages of production.

A multi-award winning composer, his compositions, musicals, songs, sfx, underscores, and jingles have been heard in short and long form productions for clients such as: CBC Radio, Bravo Television, Palmer Jarvis/DDB, RMCC, Cathay Pacific, McDonald's Special Events, UBC, Florida and California State U, Amnesty International, Virtual Stage, Vancouver Playhouse, Touchstone Theatre, Electric Company Theatre, Vancouver Theatre Sports League, and the Vancouver International Comedy Festival.

I took a trip to the GNWC in Vancouver a few weeks ago. She is working on her masters in digital media. She was half of the duo that brought us Second Life "How to get Started" and the blended reality piece. She was taking me through a personal site she built peoplevancouver.com. I think it's a great site with the feel of FaceBook but the flare of Vancouver. "Crossing" - an animated piece nominated for a Webby Award

I sat down with McKane Lee from the Masters of Digital Media program at the Great Northern Way Campus and he gave us a quick lesson on rendering using a short film he and his team produced titled "Crossing".

"Crossing", a film and animation piece produced by MDM students (in the school's first term in history!), was just short-listed for a Webby Award!

Rendering - What exactly is it?

Rendering is the process of generating an image from a model, by means of computer programs. The model is a description of three dimensional objects in a strictly defined language or data structure. It can contain geometry, viewpoint, texture, lighting, and shading information. The image is a digital image or raster graphics image. 'Rendering' is also used to describe the process of calculating effects in a video editing file to produce final video output.

I talked to student McKane Lee at the GNWC Masters of Ditigal Media program a few weeks ago and he gave us a little demo of how he rendered parts of his short film Crossing. And today, I share that demo with you.

Second Life - How to get started

As most of you know Second Life is an online virtual 3D world that anybody can join. It's even got its own CSI: NY Flickr group, you can hang on the Titanic and of course buy and sell your Linden dollars. But that's just the beginning. When I was at the Great Northern Way Campus in Vancouver Nadia Aly and Joanna Robinson gave me a quick guided tour of how to get started in Second Life and how to find them at the Masters of Digital Media program at the GNWC in Vancouver. Blended Reality: A look at bringing Second Life into Real Life

What's it like to share a real-life stage with your Second Life avatar? We've seen the use of a green screen in real life for quite some time now. Newscaster pretends to be stuck in the middle of a Hurricane. Star Wars and a fight to the death with light sabers. As technology has progressed so has the quality of this video trick but what I haven's seen much of is using a green screen in a game like Second Life to port virtual characters into Real-Life. I was in Vancouver last week hanging with some of the students at the Great Northern Way Campus who are working on their Masters in Digital Media. Nadia Aly and Joanna Robinson are these really creative women who have done some amazing things with Second Life. You have to see this.

I took a little trip to Vancouver this past weekend and spoke with Gerri Sinclair, the executive director at The Great Northern Way Campus.
