Convert Anything With Zamzar’s IE Plugin

Zamzar, the home of the popular online file conversion service, also offers a browser plugin that’s a must-have for any Internet Explorer user. The Zamzar web browser button is a bookmarklet you can add to your bookmarks toolbar folder in your web browser. With the bookmarklet installed, you’re then able to convert any files you find on the web and download them to your computer. To use the web browser button, just click on it when you’re on any website that contains files. Zamzar will auto-detect all the files on the page that can be converted and will highlight them for you. You can then choose which ones you want to convert and what format you want them converted to. You can even use the button to convert online videos from sites like YouTube. (A full list of supported video sites is here). I love this plugin, but I’m not a fan of all the pop-up ads on Zamzar’s website – so be warned. However, I don’t get pop-ups when using the plugin – only when visiting the Zamzar homepage. Still, the plugin is worth the annoyance, I suppose, at least until something better comes along.

New Version of IE7 Pro Released

You may remember when we covered IE7Pro last year, calling it the "essential IE7 add-on." Well now there is even more to love about it. A new version, IE7 Pro 2.3 was recently released and offers some bug fixes and several new features. Now, in addition to its already huge feature set (Tabbed Browsing Management, Spell Check, Inline Search, Super Drag & Drop, Crash Recovery, Proxy Switcher, Mouse Gesture, Tab History Browser, Web Accelerator, User Agent Switcher, Webpage Capturer, AD Blocker, Flash Block, a Greasemonkey-like User Scripts platform, User Plug-ins...and more), the new version now offers the following:

Support for prefetching to speed up surfing
A Session Manager that lets you save your open tabs
A Download Manager called MiniDM that support drag & drop of multiple links

Yes, I'm totally downloading this now. If you use IE, you simply have to have this. (via DownloadSquad)

IE7 Open Last Closed Tab Add-In

If you've ever accidentally closed a tab in Internet Explorer 7 when you didn't mean to, then you will know how handy this IE7 add-in can be. With the IE7 "Open Last Closed Tab" add-in, you don't have to search through your internet history to find the page you were just on; instead, just hit "Alt-X" and the accidentally closed page automatically reappears in a new tab. If you hit "Alt-Q" instead, the add-in will display a Quick Tabs Style View, which is like IE7's built-in Quick Tabs view, but features just recently closed tabs. Click on one of the thumbnails from this view, and the page will open in a new tab. This is one of those add-ins that you might not need all the time, but when you do need it, you'll be glad it's installed. The add-in is available via a free download from the Windows Marketplace.

Feeds Plus: Enhanced Feed Reading in IE7

Feeds Plus is an "unofficial" IE7 add-on developed by Nate Furtwangler and Chrix Finne, both of whom interned with the IE RSS Team. The Feeds Plus add-on they created during this time brings aggregation and notification to your IE7 feed reading experience. With Feeds Plus, feeds can be grouped within a folder and read as an aggregated feed, and this feed can be searched, sorted, and filtered just like you can with non-aggregated feeds.

A second feature is a pop-up feed notification reminiscent of Outlook’s. You can decide which feeds matter most to you and then be notified with this pop-up as soon as those feeds have new items waiting. The pop-up is unobtrusive - it fades in and out - and it includes a handy link to the feeds that it’s announcing. For more info on Feed Plus check out this blog post at the Microsoft RSS blog. IE7Pro is an add-on for the Internet Explorer 7 browser that includes a lot of tools to extend IE features and security. The feature set included with this add-on is rich -- offering Tabbed Browsing Management, Spell Check, Inline Search, Super Drag & Drop, Crash Recovery, Proxy Switcher, Mouse Gesture, Tab History Browser, Web Accelerator, User Agent Switcher, Webpage Capturer, AD Blocker, Flash Block, a Greasemonkey-like User Scripts platform, User Plug-ins and more.

IE7 Pro is free and the developers update it regularly. The IE7 Pro blog has several great video tutorials on using the add-on's features; be warned, though - the videos are set to automatically play - they all play at the same time as you load the blog's main page.

Upgrade Vista or IE7's Built-In Feed Reader

If you regularly use Vista or Internet Explorer 7's built-in RSS feed reader, but wish you could do more with it, you'll love the free upgrade to RikReader. Codename:RikReader is an RSS reader which complements the RSS platform in Vista and IE7. Once installed, the application offers a choice of views for reading your feeds. You can read feeds in a standard view, with items ordered by date posted. You can read feeds individually, or if they are grouped into folders for better organization, you can read all the items contained in one of the folders.

With the reader's unified view, you can also choose to see all the feeds you subscribe to in a single list. A view called "Newspaper View," displays feeds organized as if they were articles on a newspaper page, which is a unique and aesthetically pleasing way to read your items. Best of all, though, is RikReader's search ability. The reader offers full-text, indexed searching which allows your to perform advanced searching of all of your items quickly and easily from the search box at the top of the reader's window. Search is a feature that is often sorely lacking in many online readers, so that feature alone, makes RikReader worth a try.
