Bill Gates and Charles Torre got together at TechEd to talk about his transition into the future and the changes in his goals as he goes from driving Microsoft to driving the Gates Foundation.

This is a good opportunity to see some of the gears turning behind decisions like putting Ray Ozzie in the CSA seat, how we address competitors, increasing agility while growing, and what developers should be paying attention to this decade and next.

Com certeza muitos de vocês sabem que o Bill Gates vai se aposentar do seu cargo como Chief Software Architect - basicamente o cérebro tecnológico da empresa. A aposentadoria acontece na sexta dia 27 de junho. Os diversos meios de comunicações vão noticiar de alguma forma ou outra sobre essa aposentadoria, cada um dando seu ângulo à estória. Bom, nós aqui do on10 fazemos parte da comunidade composta por diversos "canais": Channel 8 para estudantes, Channel 9 para desenvolvedores, Edge para profissionais de TI, Mix Online para designers, e nós do on10 (ou Channel 10) para fãs de tecnologia em geral. A maior feira do mundo de "brinquedos" eletrônicos fecha suas portas hoje para a edição de 2008. A CES acontece duas vezes por ano, mas os destaques inovadores, as tecnologias de ponta e as visões futurísticas aparecem na edição de janeiro. Durante esses 04 dias, centenas de milhares de pessoas brigam por poder chegar próximos aos seus objetos de sonhos e desejos. Telas gigantes, computadores ultra-portáteis, carros conectados e diversos outros produtos saem de Las Vegas após estontearem, ou decepcionarem, seus fãs.

Na edição desse ano, os organizadores agruparam as principais tecnologias sendo demonstradas em TechZones, zonas dividas por padrão tecnológico ou uma associação de um padrão ou protocolo tecnológico. Por essas zonas podemos ver em quais tecnologias o mercado está apostando. Algumas dessas zonas caem em múltiplas categorias, mas em geral vemos foco em Imagem e Som Digital em Alta Definição, Comunicação sem Fios, Integração de Tecnologias para Casa (a famosa Casa Digital ou Conectada), Tecnologias Sustentáveis, Robótica e Podcasting (como ferramenta de negócios). O principal destaque foram monitores digitais de diversos tamanhos e diversas resoluções. Pequenas telas com comunicação sem fios para puxar conteúdo de qualquer tipo de sinal, plasmas de 150 polegadas e outras de 9mm de espessura, LCDs de 82 polegadas em QuadHD e OLEDs chegando a tamanhos maiores (1 e 2) e finalmente sendo comercializadas fora do Japão. Com o avanço tecnológico nessa área de displays, os preços continuam caindo e as telas digitais expandem para os mercados internacionais. Uma pesquisa da Pacific Media Associates prevê uma queda de 15% nos preços das telas finas e um crescimento mundial de 41%. Na área de áudio-vídeo, o campo do Blu-Ray comemorou uma vitória importante às vésperas da CES quando a Warner se comprometeu em apoiar exclusivamente o formato da Sony, após ter distribuído seu conteúdo de alta definição em HD-DVD e Blu-Ray,

Uma grande surpresa na fera foi a quantidade absurda de tecnologias sem fios focadas em resolver o problema dos cabos de áudio e vídeo. Desde fabricantes de áudio-vídeo – LG, Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Westinghouse, Toshiba – aos especialistas em equipamento de redes e tecnologias wireless – Belkin, Netgear, entre outros. Outra surpresa foi a quantidade de soluções elaboradas para levar o conteúdo do PC para a TV, com modelos da HP (1 e 2), Linksys, D-Link, Niveus e Samsung utilizando a tecnologia da Microsoft, o Windows Media Center Extender. Essas soluções para transmissão de áudio e vídeo sem fios são (infelizmente) baseadas em tecnologias e padrões distintos, como o 802.11N (evolução do WiFi), WUSB (versão sem fios do USB), WirelessHD (compete indiretamente com o WUSB), e alguns virão sob nomes proprietários como o Sony "TransferJet", para maior confusão. Há ainda o protocolo de Near Field Communications (NFC) cujo próprio nome explica seu propósito – realizar comunicações (de dados) rápidas e sem fios a curtas distâncias. Uma aplicação comum é em cartões de crédito ou celulares.

O tão comentado WiMax, com grande impulso da Intel e da Sprint, também apareceu mostrando diversos dispositivos pequenos que tinham rádios WiMax, como o ASUS EeePC, OQO Modelo 2, e até celular da LG. A Sprint vai lançar a primeira rede WiMax nos Estados Unidos, a XOHM, em abril desse ano. Diz a Sprint que haverá 10 dispositivos WiMax para o lançamento.

Finalmente, na área de Casa Digital ou Casa Conectada, a feira não deixou de desejar. A Life|Ware, empresa líder em automação residencial, montou uma área enorme com atores profissionais demonstrando o que é uma casa inteligente e conectada. Rodando em cima da plataforma Windows Media Center, o software Life|Ware automatiza ar condicionado, luzes, termostatos, portas, câmeras de segurança, e tudo que você possa imaginar. Meu amigo Ian Dixon conseguiu filmar um trecho da tour pela casa de 4 ambientes. Um fato talvez ignorado nessa casa e em muitos outros produtos da feira é o fato que o protocolo IP está sendo incorporado em produtos surpreendentes. Que tal um receiver da Denon com portas RJ-45? Ou os televisores da HP, Sony, e Samsung com ethernet e 802.11n (links acima)? O fato é que esse protocolo está se proliferando em diversos setores, como já vimos com o de dados, telefonia, e recentemente de vídeo com a IPTV – a qual teve rápida presença na feira com a plataforma MediaRoom da Microsoft e o anuncio de parceria com a British Telecom que utilizará o Xbox 360 como terminal de IPTV.

Enfim, há muita coisa pela frente ainda, e de acordo com Bill Gates, em sua despedida da CES, estamos agora entrando na segunda década digital, frase que ele usou anos atrás em outro keynote da CES. Pelo menos nós não passaremos pela dificuldade de se adaptar a uma nova carreira depois de tantos anos no serviço como o Bill.

The CES keynote stream is starting now, you can see it here. This is an important night for Bill Gates, after 15 years and 11 keynote addresses, this will be his last as he begins the transition from Microsoft FTE (full time employee) to being a full-time Gates Foundation employee.

Bill was kind enough to sit down with us this morning and talk about the state of consumer electronics, what he thinks is important, and where this is all going. Stay tuned because after the keynote we'll be posting an interview with Robbie Bach.

Yesterday we introduced you to Xian Chaoren , a company from China who make incredibly lifelike humanoid robots. I was fortunate enough to run into this Father / Daughter duo at Wired Magazine's NextFest. After finishing the interview about her fathers twin robot she REALLY wanted to make this request of Bill Gates. So, here it is- and Bill, if you're watching, I think we all would agree that we could use another you :)

I couldn't NOT go to the launch event for Halo 3 right here in Bellevue, Washington at our nearby Best Buy. Honestly, I was overwhelmed. There were hundreds of screaming Halo fans, free stuff, food, music, and PLENTY of Gamer Fuel. On top of all that excitement I got to talk to legendary football quarterback Warren Moon, Bungie community leader Brian Jarrard, Microsoft's global marketing Maestro Jeff Bell - and the man himself Bill Gates even came out to run the register on the first copy Halo 3 sold there. Plus, I got to mess with fanboys! Good Times!

Microsoft's Unlimited Potential program lands in India

Microsoft is going to start testing a new education PC called IQPC as well as launching an education channel on its MSN Portal. They will be testing the PC in India sometime next month. This is all part of Microsoft's "Unlimited Potential" program that Bill Gates announced in April. The program aims to use technology to increase the awareness and the reach of education to those previously left behind. The education channel will be accessible through the IQPC and internet cafes. At around 10pm Pacific Bill Gates and Steve Jobs sat down together for their first public joint interview at the D: All Things Digital conference. In one of the most exciting moments for anyone following the personal computing industry, these two titans carried on together in a way no one expected; as friends and equals. Their conversation was earnest and pleasant, and an incredibly satisfying history lesson. WinHEC 2007 has begun

For those who aren’t familiar, this is the place to see the some of the coolest new hardware coming to the Windows ecosystem. Okay, I'm a total sucker for looking back into anything. I love VHI's "I love the eighties". I could spend hours in the Microsoft Visitors Center checking out old photos and Key Events from the 70's. It just goes to show you how much and how quickly the world changes. I found these key events from the seventies and if anybody finds this stuff as interesting as I do let me know and I'll bring you the following decade. :)

1975

January 1. The MITS Altair 8800 appears on the cover of Popular Electronics, inspiring Paul Allen and Bill Gates to develop a BASIC language for the Altair.

February 1. Bill Gates and Paul Allen sell BASIC, the first computer language program for a personal computer, to Microsoft's first customer, MITS of Albuquerque, NM.

March 1. Paul Allen joins MITS as director of software.

April 7. "Altair BASIC‑Up and Running," declares the headline of the first edition of MITS Computer Notes.

July 1. BASIC officially ships as version 2.0 in both 4K and 8K editions.

February 3. Bill Gates is one of the first programmers to raise the issue of software piracy. In "An Open Letter to Hobbyists," first published in MITS Computer Notes, Gates accuses hobbyists of stealing software and thus preventing "...good software from being written." He prophetically concludes with the line, "...Nothing would please me more than being able to hire ten programmers and deluge the hobby market with good software."

Steve Jobs suggests a solution to the DRM music equation

At the Mix n' Mash event in Redmond last year, Bill Gates acknowledged the problems with the DRM employed with digital music, and that there is no easy solution. Now in a rare release that has been described by our trusted tipster as the, "best blog platform ever..." Steve Jobs has published his Thoughts on Music. The ten minute read addresses the current state of digital music across the entire market and respectfully considers all the players. While we expect people to critique his argument along the same stale lines (can't we all just get along?), the more important issue that Steve raises is about how two-faced the music companies are: "In 2006, under 2 billion DRM-protected songs were sold worldwide by online stores, while over 20 billion songs were sold completely DRM-free and unprotected on CDs by the music companies themselves." We're certainly pleased to have first Bill and now Steve, both people who hold considerable sway over this issue, helping the market understand where they should really focus their displeasure.

The Vista and Office launch on the Microsoft campus

We're here in Cafe 34 on the main Redmond campus to welcome Vista and Office to the world. The room is filled with microsofties, lunches and laptops, and hundreds of balloons netted suspiciously to the ceiling. In a few minutes Windows godfather Jim Allchin will grace the stage as master of campus ceremonies for the launch. While we won't be liveblogging the event, the C9 Coffeehouse thread will be extremely busy over the next hour. We'll also be updating this post later in the afternoon with some aftermath reporting.

Bill Gates brings Vista to The Daily Show

Microsoft in the Healthcare Industry - Consumer Health World video interview

I'm back in the office after a two week Holiday break. 2007 is upon us, and I look forward to a very exciting year with the introduction of Windows Vista, Office 2007, and some of the first new solutions from our Health Solutions Group here at Microsoft.

Just before vacation, I attended Consumer Health World in Washington, D.C., where I had the opportunity to serve on a couple of panel discussions with other colleagues from global technology companies as well as some distinguished healthcare industry leaders.

In the conference exhibit hall I met up with longtime friend and colleague, Dr. Mike Magee. Dr. Magee is a prolific writer and blogger who hosts the popular Health Politics site sponsored by Pfizer's Medical Humanities Initiative. Dr. Magee asked me to sit down for a video interview to share some thoughts about healthcare information technology and Microsoft's role in the industry. We also touched on a variety of other topics including the future of blogging, consumerism in healthcare, what's new at Microsoft, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and more. You can link to the streaming video here.

The next two months will be busy with Microsoft healthcare executive forum events in Minneapolis, Austin, Kansas City, and New York. I will also be keynoting at the Dallas Health Industry Council annual meeting, and the Healthcare Price and Quality Transparency Conference in Las Vegas. Then of course comes one of this year's biggest events, HIMSS 2007 and MSHUG in New Orleans. Microsoft's Steve Ballmer will be on the podium this year at HIMSS. I hope to see you there.

In an announcement that will surely send geeks and paranoid futurists into equal states of excitement, Microsoft Robotics Studio goes 1.0 today. Keep this man's face in your mind, as Tandy Trower is on his way to becoming the real-life Alfred Lanning.

Earlier this summer Channel 9 interviewed the MSR team, and now the hard work of this team is moving closer towards the future of Bill Gate's Scientific American article, "A Robot in Every Home." Now if we can just avoid the inevitable robot uprising ;)
