I would like to know if there is a possibility that you could provide folks that would like to put a little Channel 10 on their webpage/blog/Myspace/Facebook profile/whatever with an embed code for the awesome videos? I would really like to put the Frogger Popfly video on my gax profile page.

Quick yes or no question:

Does anybody think MS will make a big success out of LiveMesh? They have other brilliant offerings such as Silverlight (and yes Rome wasn't built in a day) but adoption is still mainly limited to the  technically literate. At present LiveMesh doesn't serve a gret deal of purpose to a very large proportion of the population, and this is what MS is using to stay relevant. Don't misinterpret my words, I think the idea is great, it's just I question the timing:

  • At present not many people need the basic feature
  • By the time developers have made tools is it possible that somebody else will have arrived with a truely multi-platform solution?
  • I can see one of the most promising things for a technology like Live Mesh is the new lines of UMPCs and other road warrior second PCs- however at present they don't run on Linux or Mac, yes Mac support is planned, but Linux and devices like the EePC won't run this whilst MS hasn't really broken mainstream consciousness yet with the UMPC- personally I think the form factor still needs some changes.
  • Will this sort of thing be in the next Windws release? If not I can see something else doing the same and getting all the attention.

Just some concerns, I can understand the numerous reasons for not supporting Linux including the fact that many would turn their noses at any MS product for some reason, but I can't help feel I am not the only one who thinks this like many great MS products could get wrongfully overshadowed by a Google App for instance and this is the thing that is praised as keeping MS relevant!

Other examples:

  • MS Live image search- best UI out there by a long way, barely known about
  • MS Live Video- great preview funcionality nobody paid any attention to
  • MS Vitual Earth- a brilliant GUI and fantastically useful features- rarely used by anybody I know

MS is very good at building on past successes but I don't see much that will definitely keep them relevant in the near future, I hope I am wrong but I think many people rarely see the brilliance of this company and it saddens me.

Ok people - this forum needs a jump start.

Here's the deal. We want you beautiful people to start using the Channel 10 forum as a place to dicuss shiny new tech and find answers to your (Microsoft related) questions.

So to get things-a-rolling, I'm going to offer up my services to get to the bottom of YOUR most pressing questions that need a good answering!

This is how it will work.

Ask me a question in the forum. If it's (partially) sensible, I'll jump on my Heeley's and go find the answer for you.

Max is doing the same thing in the Channel 8 Student Union forums. If we get the same question, we might team up and go find the answer together, Voltron style.

Examples of questions I would probably investigate for you on your behalf,...

- I want to do X with product Y,.. can it be done?
- What's the best way to setup my Z?
- Is it true that A is actually a giant, cybernetic, man-eating B?
- What do Microsoft employees eat for lunch? (short answer: brrraaaaaiinnnssss)

So who wants to step up first? Feel free to reply in this thread or create your own.

-Fillo (aka Nic)

For some reason the Channel 10 podcast feed on Itunes is giving me an error when trying to update. I click the ! mark and it says.
There was a problem downloading "Channel 10"/ An Unkown Error occurred (-50).
Please check that the URL is correct and the connection to the network is active and try again.

Is anyone else besides me having the same problem?

Hi

I'm hoping as this is a young forum run by an enthusiast that I might get the true situation regarding folders.

I have Vista MC & a Linksys DMA2200 extender linked to my Plasma TV. It really works and I am very pleased with the operation and have not had (m)any technical hitches. However despite reading other forums and reading several 'solutions' to my question there appears to be no total solution.

Basically, why cant you just select the Folders you do/dont want to appear under the various media selections i.e. Music/Pics/vids. This applies to both the PC & Exteneder. No matter how much I have added/removed folders, rebooted, cleared MC watched folders etc folders I dont want re-appear.

The worst offending is Root Drive letter where I keep folders. e.g. I keep my Media Folders on an M drive but always the M Drive shows up as a folder  even though it only contains folders for Music/Vid/Pics. Aother repeat offender is the Music Album Covers in Pics.

File EXplorer is probably the oldest piece of software in Windows and yet VMC cant do something as simple as letting the User have control over their selections.

Your cooments would be interesting and any solutions you (may) have found.

Thanks, Alan & good lick with the blog/forum.

I've been doing some research on connecting my Vista MCE to bedrooms, but just can't get my head around. Let me paint an image of what I want to do.

I've built a Media Home Center which is Vista Home Premium sitting in my basement. Its a Duo Core Asus Motherboard with 2GB memory, Hauppauge HVR-1600 Tuner and 8500GT nvidia Video Card. I have 3 Standard Televisions in 3 Bedroom which is on the top floor and 1 TV in the Kitchen. I want Watch TV in any of my bedroom, i.e. any member can watch different channels simultaneously, how can I achieve this? I don't have XBOX 360 and don't want to invest  4 XBOX 360 for each TV. Is there any other way I can do this?

Help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Automatically Display latest video from TechNet EDGE on your blog

Although the tip given is for TechNET EDGE, it should also work for Channel 10 videos?? Will it work? Else channel10 to implement this. And I have put it on trial basis on my blog sidebar and it should automatically display the latest video from Channel 10.

Just try this out. Please check the above URL for details.

I am curious as to how well the Webguide plug-in works with WHS when trying to view video from an internet connection.  Right now I have Webguide loaded on my MCE machine and when I want to stream video from my work my video is pretty bad.  Choppy at times and keeps having to buffer every 4-5 seconds.  Or the video freezes and the audio continues on.  My MCE is a older box, but it is a Pentium III or IV I believe and I would guess it runs better then the Celeron in my new HP MediaSmart Home Server.  When I am streaming I am streaming at about 200 kbps and it is still bad.  Also if I am at home and want to stream I have to use a very low speed which does not manke sense since I am local to my webguide.  Is my machine just not processing the video quick enough?

Thanks!

-Scott

I just discovered the "full screen" button on the main page and I think it is really great, just when I switch to full screen the video gets all grainy at a screen resolution of 1920x1200 because it is not the high resolution version that you offer for download. Could you possibly add something like a "preference" setting that lets me watch the videos in full screen in high resolution without actually downloading them to my harddrive?

So what are your favorite Media Center and Home Server Plugins?

My favorites are WebGuide for Media Center (and Home Server) (http://www.asciiexpress.com/webguide/)

And for Windows Home Server I couldn't live without Remote Notification now (http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=19)

Please keep posting videos of the microsoft employees homes, and what they do with their microsoft computer systems, I really enjoy that. It would be nice if it were an actual show on tv thou too.. Something like " Tech this house" or Tech my Crip or Employees of Microsoft who've teched their homes... LOL ... something like that on a real tv channel would be really cool.

Thanks, Kim from CT

Very cool.  Were you able to get Media Center to serve up video to an extender directly from a Home Server share?  I spent a few minutes on this and while it seemed willing to be configured to do so, and it did then show up in Vista's Media Center, subsequently trying to view Home Server stored video through Vista's Media Center on my 360 didn't work.  No videos are listed...

Did you hit this?  Any ideas?

Thanks and congratz on a well integrated system!

Well, we know that Xbox LIVE has been experiencing issues, lately, but I have not heard about this....

I was wondering if Major Nelson knows anything about this.

This C10 video of the Silverlight card isn't from the Silverlight team (AFAIK).

The video is surrounded by a frame and on a website which accredits the content to Mason Zimbler - a marketing firm based in the UK.

I'm sure they don't mind using their video (and I know it's been hitting the rounds in the Microsoft internal mail) but it's worth giving them the kudos for it.

Good stuff, and Happy New Year!

Good to see a new layout, but what about a new 10 logo?

Maybe...another contest?

No offense to Max. I do like his design, but it would be interesting to see a new logo, as well as a new layout.

So did I miss an announcement of the change? The last several days the site did not open readily and when I clicked on blogs there was acutal code displayed. Today it look 30-40 seconds for the site to open.

What are the advantages of the new site?

Thanks.

I've never seen so many redesigns in such a short period. I love this new design!

I do not think there is a very active on10 community though. I want to see more exciting things, more things like Zune hacks, more useful little computer tips. on10 needs more attractive content, the interview with Will Wright was great...but there is something missing here still. Channel9 has been suffering a bit lately too, I loved watching videos with Steve Ball, talking about and showing off the next generation audio stack ...etc.

Anyways, the new design is great.
