Alright, in all seriousness, WA is overdue for some kind of BIG natural-event and whether that be an Earthquake, volcanic eruption, or a Tsunami...when it happens, we should (if possible) run, indeed.

The recent activity at Mt. St. Helens over the past year has made a lot of people (including, myself) very nervous.

I wasn't even born yet, when Helens erupted back in 1980, but those pictures and video of the event are really amazing and scary. Heck, my family still has some of the ash that fell from the sky.

If (or should I say "when") it happens again, I hope I'll be VERY far away.

And as for an Earthquake, I think it's only matter of time, until Seattle has another BIG quake.

There has been some recent quake activity in WA (not just the Helens's quakes) and we can't forget that one fairly large quake that hit Seattle a few years back, causing a lot of damage to some of the buildings/streets in the downtown area.

Being someone who actually does that every once in a while...well...when there actually is an emergency...I must admit it does give you a bit of a rush to "press that button".

An RSS based system for alerting is already available. It is called GDACS (www.gdacs.org).

One cool site that is making use of technology (including RSS, XML) to make the world a better place is the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System (www.gdacs.org) developed in joint coordination between UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA) and the European Uninion (EU).

It collect information from various sources on the web and automates the process of alerting disaster responders around the world, like me, about the potential disaster that has occured.

I highly recommend you take a look.

Nursing Homes

I like the fact that they have a warning system just for the nursing homes.
During Hurricaine Katrina over half of the people who died were the eldery in nursing homes.

Pretty friggin' prone. You can take tours of "underground" Seattle, where large portions of the city were so damaged in a massive earthquake that new streets were laid on top, as a cheaper alternative to actually rebuilding. You can go down some cellars and find old storefronts that face onto portions of old streets, complete with boardwalks and lampposts...

Emercency Blogcast System

Beeeeeep! This is a test of the emergency blogcast system!

Now that was cheesy. I was really excited to see you gals standing in front of the fighter and joking about the Air Force. I'm currently serving and I drive by an F-104 similar to that at the emergency responce center and Air National Guard base beside Fort Dix on my way to McGuire AFB all the time.

I have a tremendous respect for the work and logistics those guys deal with. You also have to stop and applaud the guys who provide support like medical and maintance. A great sum of money and manpower go into the daily operation of a place like that.

While volcanoes and Tsunamis were mentioned, there wasn't much said about geographical causes such as earthquakes, off shore or land based. How prone to Earthquakes is Seattle?

Nah, that's just human nature. We all want to see some action, especially when you're visiting a place like that. Hell, when I was in Iraq in 2003, I was just waiting for the bombs to start falling and the guns shooting. That was a short campaign and I was lucky that I only spent 6 months over there.

That was really cool to see actually because since I use to live in Alaska I'm sure we went through a lot of the same types of natural disasters/emergencies. It's interesting to see how much danger I was on a daily basis and didn't even know about it. On a serious note, it's good to see somebody keeping the trend of Aviator sunglasses alive with Brendan leaving AOTS, thank you Laura. But the question remains what are we in more danger from, earthquakes or Laura throwing rocks at us, that was hilarious!
