Behind the scenes of a real DNA lab

Join Tina on a tour of
Genelex
, a real DNA lab, and learn about that crazy nucleic acid that we all love. While she's there, Tina starts the process of getting tested to learn about her geographical origins and her ancestral lines... all based on her DNA!

Their Ancestry is done in Utah, they dont actually do that in Seattle. be careful - MANY people didnt like their results because its completely ambiguous. Ask the sales rep thats been their the longest - she did the Ancestry Profile on her own Mom and it was essentially bogus.

It takes a couple of weeks, because Genelex outsources their DNA testing to a lab in Utah ( for Ancestry) and Univ of Louisville KY ( for DRT CYP450) the only thing they do in house is Paternity.

I am interested in the software used to process DNS samples, very sofisticated, and interesting. Any idea's !
One question that does come to my mind about all europions being descendents of 7 common mothers, is where did they descend from ? and does this eventually take us to one common mother and father ?

All I ask is that you please don't go on
Maury
and have the results read by him. =)
But, this is very intereting stuff. I'm curious about the results.
I'm wondering about my ancestry, as well. Although, I don't know if I would say "swab, please."

No, I have no temple for Tina, nor any images of her around...that would be a little too much, even for me.
I have nothing but the utmost respect for her as a beautiful writer, journalist, and host. Most importantly, I would never do anything to offend her.
If she is displeased with my comments, I'll drop the goddess material.

Somehow Genelex seemed like a very commercial outfit. I always thought DNA testing was a bit more intricate/sophisticated. Maybe it was the "hair swish" or Mr. Moonwook´s lack of insight. Tech wise, the installations didn´t seem as impressive as I would have imagined either. Oh well... interesting and different.
How come you decided to visit Genelex in the first place?

We all know about the conspiracy.
Wait a minute...you mean the non-evil Tina doesn't like to post on message boards? Does she play video games? Does she have an Xbox 360, yet?
Talk to ya when you're 50? Would you even consider a "Mini-me" clone?

Standard DNA test works like this
Day 1- log in samples
Day 2 - extract DNA - this can take longer for non-standard samples like bones or kleenex
Day 3 - Gel has to run overnight
Day 4 - Analysis
Day 5 - review
The reason for the lag. The analysis is run by a machine. These machines cost about the same to run a tray if it contains 1 sample or maximum capacity (100 samples, 386 samples, depends on the machine). So as testing becomes more commonly ordered, it processed more quickly.

i just love that line in Lost in Space (the newer one) where the genetic engineer tells the military guy that he's the one that determines whether he grows a third arm. and to think that's only 20-30 years away.

Flock / FireFox / Opera all either take a long time to load the QT stream, or semm to give up. IE seems rather snappy with a nearly immediate first frame loaded. All other browsers seem to hang for a bit with the Quicktime logo...
Oh, this is Microsoft based? *deciding whether or not to use IE for a single website*

I always found genetics to be a remarkable subject...and who better to cover the topic than my goddess of gaming and true love, Tina. Yeah, genetic testing is time consuming and expensive, but the results are truely remarkable, provided the technology isn't abused. With any luck, we'll see what European ancestry Tina is decended from in a few weeks. :)
Oh, and I'd be more than happy to provide you with excellent paternal options, my goddess. ;)

Very cool. Exactly the kind of stuff I was talking about in my ideas/suggestions about medical advancements and such.
That's kind of funny to see Tina standing along 4th Ave. I used walk past that Starbucks EVERY day to go to The Art Institute of Seattle. Riding those buses was so boring.
Anyway, about the Genelex tour. One word: GREAT. It will be interesting to see the results of the DNA test and found out the origins of the T-Dub ancestory.
I had a bad reaction to Benedryl (sp?) when I was younger, so I'm wondering if that's the only medicine I'm allergic to.
So, what wondering is...if cloning humans were ever to be legal...would Tina want to be cloned?

what's cool is that they could probably create different flavors of Tina.... like an "evil" Tina... or instead they could create a Tina army spreading goodness throughout the land.... the possibilites are endless, although the original Tina might be out of the job cause the Tina Clones would probably work for less $...

I think it's because there are like millions of lines of DNA code... and there is probably a decent amount of people getting the tests done, and probably only a few places that have the equipment to figure out what the heck is up with your DNA... so it would be reasonable to believe that it could take that long... although pee tests sometimes take just as long, and that's just testing your pee. lol

Nice show though. I work for a large healthcare company, pharmaceuticals being one of our sectors. So it was interesting to hear how these types of tests are going to influence Adverse Drug Reactions research and reporting.
