The BMW blog (not the official company blog) has just posted a about BMW’s introduction of Microsoft Surface as a product configuration tool. An application running on the multi-touch table top computer installed at dealerships will let customers configure their car by touching the screen to change features like car color, trim, wheels, seat covering, etc. The application, called the “BMW Product Navigator,” was developed by Vectorform, the same team that brought the Microsoft Surface to MSNBC news, where it became a staple of the U.S. elections coverage.

The BMW Product Navigator lets consumers change the various options by placing samples (small tiles) on the screen’s surface, where they are identified by the computer which then updates the on screen image accordingly. The end result is a fully customized car which can be viewed as both photos and videos. The following video demonstrates the BMW Navigator in action:
