Chris Satchell, General Manager of the XNA group, was kind enough to give us some of his time at GDC for an update on XNA, the success of Game Studio Express and how far away the "youtube of games" really is. Be sure to check out our video on the GDC XNA Challenge; four games in four days for more on XNA at GDC.

YouTube of gaming?

Are you serious?

People don't PAY for YouTube.

People SHARE content, tools, ideas, concepts.. they can help each other.

XNA will never take off outside of the indie developer niche. The public will never buy into XNA. There will never be enough people involved in XNA for it to reach that same kind of mass as YouTube.

Give them free tools, Give them a free platform, Give them free content to work with. Sell the best content back to the community and make money, I think Jaffe might be on to that kind of idea, and by extension Sony.

LZIM: The only costs associated with XNA as an enthusiast are if you want to develop on the Xbox 360. Obviously you need an Xbox 360 console but also a subscription to the XNA Creators Club.

If you don't want to develop for Xbox 360 then there are absolutely no costs involved as all the tools are free.

The services proposed for sharing XNA game code and executables will also be free. As you've said; youtube is free and therefore any service modelling itself on that principal should also be free. XNA is no exception.

Perhaps you misheard something in the interview?

Did you even listen to the interview?!? Did you watch the other video?
