Vom 21.-24. August fand die Games Convention 2008 in Leipzig statt. Ich war am Wochenende dabei und habe ein paar Videos darüber gemacht.

In diesem Video spreche ich mit Georg Backer, Audio Associate Producer von Lionhead Studios über das Action-Role-Playing-Spiel Fable 2. Fable 2 ist der Nachfolger von Fable 1 und Georg erzählt mir, was für Neuerungen es in dem Spiel gibt.

Auf der Games Convention dieses Jahr hatten 5555 Xbox Live Gold Mitglieder die Möglichkeit in dem Backstage-Bereich, Fable 2 selbst auszuprobieren. Fable 2 wird am 24. Oktober im Europa in den Laden zu kaufen sein.

Photosynth - Wie erstellt man ein Synth?

Wie ich letzte Woche geschrieben habe, hat Microsoft Live Labs eine neue Version von Photosynth gelauncht. Photosynth ist ein kostenloser Service, um Fotos in einem 3D-Umfeld zu erleben und auszutauschen.

Um selbst ein Synth (3D-Model mit Fotos) zu bauen, braucht Ihr eine Kollektion von Fotos von einem Objekt oder einem Ort – am besten 20-300 Fotos mit Überlappung und verschieden Blickwinkel. Mit der Hilfe des Photosynth-Tools könnt Ihr dann ein 3D-Model aus den Fotos erstellen.

Die besten Synths beginnen mit den richtigen Fotos. Um besser zu verstehen wie man ein Synth selbst baut, habe ich das „Photosynth – How To“-Video auf Deutsch synchronisiert. Schau das Video an, um zu lernen, wie man Fotos macht, um ein gutes Synth zu bauen.

Es gibt auch eine Anleitung zur Photosynth-Fotografie. Diese Anleitung zeigt, welche Art von Fotos für Photosynth besonders geeignet ist. Die Anleitung hilft Ihr zu vermeiden, mehrere hundert Fotos zu machen und dann später festzustellen, dass Photosynth sie nicht so zusammenstellt, wie erwartet. Heute Morgen ist die neue Version von Photosynth gelauncht worden. Photosynth ist einer fantastischen neuen Art, Fotos in einem 3D-Umfeld auszutauschen und zu erleben. Die Webseite findet Ihr unter: http://photosynth.com

Photosynth ist eine kostenlose Service von Microsoft Live Labs. Photosynth nimmt eine Kollektion von Fotos von einem Objekt oder Ort und analysiert jedes Foto auf Ähnlichkeiten mit den anderen. Die Applikation dann ermittelt, wo das Bild aufgenommen wurde und baut eine 3D-Model raus. Die Fotos werden im richtigen Platz auf der 3D-Model platziert und Du hast die Möglichkeit durch das 3D-Model zu bewegen. Es ist ein echt cooles Erlebnis!

Mit dieser neuen Version von Photosynth hat man jetzt die Chance selbst Synths zu erstellen. Das Photosynth-Tool um Synths zu erstellen ist einfach zu bedienen aber um ein gutes Synth zu bauen braucht man viele Fotos und ein bisschen Übung. Ich benutze Photosynth seit ein paar Wochen und ich muss sagen, dass auch die Übung mit Photosynth Spaß macht. In den nächsten Tagen werde ich ein Video veröffentlichen, wie man gute Synths erstellt.

Ich habe inzwischen viele Synths gebaut aber meine Lieblings-Synths sind von Angkor Wat und Marienplatz. Vor ein paar Wochen war ich im Urlaub im Kambodscha und ich habe viele Fotos von Angkor Wat gemacht. Vor ein paar Tage habe ich ein sehr schönes Synth von Marienplatz im München erstellt. Um die Synths anzuschauen, klicke auf der Link unten und installiere das Photosynth-Plugin. Photosynth funktioniert momentan nur auf Windows aber eine Mac Version sollte bald verfügbar sein. Als Browser sollte Ihr Internet Explorer 7, FireFox 2, oder FireFox 3 haben.

EMIC - Information Overload and Crisis of Choice

We are drowning in a sea of information overload. Every day, television channels, email, books and music assault our senses with far too much content. The volume of content on the internet and generated by applications is literally exploding. Not only traditional media but millions of individual users are putting their own content on the web. The massive popularity of YouTube is just one example of this phenomenon. In this flood, how do you distinguish between content that matters to you from all the rest? How can you easily discover information, multimedia content and entertainment that matches your interests or preferences? How do you deal with this crisis of choice?

Well, Software Engineers at the European Microsoft Innovation Center (EMIC) are working on a project that allows for the quick creation of prototype solutions that help people solve this crisis of choice.

In this video, Ron Mevissen, Lead Developer of the EMIC Home team, gives an introduction to the topic of information overload and the project that he and colleagues are working on. He also demonstrates the Media Center recommender prototype that helps you find interesting TV programs. After that, Stefan Hirtbach shows a recommender for Outlook that helps you decide the importance of email - which email should I read now, which one can wait. Rich Hanbidge shows a recommender for Xbox Live that helps you find interesting items such as downloadable videos, games, etc. offered by Xbox Live. Rene Hülswitt demos the Virtual Earth recommender that helps find interesting POI (points of interests) such as restaurants or tourist attractions near you.

The EMIC in Aachen, Germany was founded in 2003 and is a Microsoft Research & Development facility. The German lab is unique to Microsoft in its focus on collaborative applied research in Europe. EMIC works in the context of development programs sponsored by the European Commission and the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Its research is focused on enterprise, mobility, home, security, software verification and embedded systems.

European Microsoft Innovation Center

Back in June I went to Aachen, Germany to visit the European Microsoft Innovation Center (EMIC). While I was there, I had the chance to speak with some of the Microsoft scientists and engineers working in Aachen and find out more about what kind of projects and research they are doing. At the beginning of this video, I chat with John Lefor, Director of EMIC. He fills me in on the Innovation Center and where it fits into the scheme of things at Microsoft.

In the second part of this video, I take a look at one of the projects at EMIC and speak with Zhou Wang, Software Design Engineer from the EMIC Mobility Team. He tells me about the Smart Radio Resource Management framework that he is working on. The purpose of the framework is to create a better user experience while using a wireless network.

Wireless access to data and services, especially streaming of data, is getting more and more important for the networking and multimedia experience for mobile and home users. Networking technology currently only uses a small area of the available radio spectrum at one time and is sensitive to interference by other stations. The project that Zhou is working on optimizes the radio spectrum usage and increases the available bandwidth. It withstands interference by dynamically adapting to changes in the radio environment. The demo in the video focuses on wireless streaming in a typical household scenario. Zhou simulates interference but it has no effect on the multimedia application. It creates a better user experience for the user as you don’t notice the interference and have better network bandwidth.

Gespräch mit Stephan Fasshauer - Office Tipps & Highlights

Neulich habe ich mit Stephan Fasshauer (Marketing Manager bei Microsoft Deutschland) über Office, Office Live und Office Online gesprochen. Er hat mir die Unterschiede zwischen die verschiedenen Produkte erklärt und mir ein paar Tipps zu den Office Produkte gegeben. Stephan hat mir auch sein Lieblingsfeature (SmartArt) und ein Schnellstartleiste Add-in für Office 2007 gezeigt. Dieses Add-in erweitert die Multifunktionsleiste (Ribbon) mit einem neuen Menüpunkt, das ermöglicht man schnell auf wichtige Hilfe und Anleitungen, Tipps & Tricks Ressourcen zuzugreifen und macht den Einstieg in Office 2007 einfacher. Auch interessant für Leute, die auf Office 2007 umgestiegen sind, ist ein Tool, um Funktionen in Office 2003 und 2007 zu vergleichen. Es ist ein interaktives Referenzhandbuch, um Funktionen in der neuen Menüführung zu finden.

WorldWide Telescope & Backchannel-Diskussion

Vor ein paar Jahre war ich auf Hawaii – the Big Island – und bin da auf dem Vulkan Mauna Kea Sterngucken gegangen. Was ich da oben gesehen habe, war unglaublich und fast unbeschreiblich. Die Sterne, die Milchstraße war so klar und so schön. Wenn man in einer großen Stadt wohnt, hat man wenige Möglichkeiten die Sterne wirklich zu betrachten, wie ich auf Mauna Kea gesehen habe. Seit einem Monat habe ich ein neues „Spielzeug“ entdecket, das erlaubt mich die Sterne näher zu betrachten ohne nach Hawaii zu fliegen müssen. WorldWide Telescope ist ein kostenloses Tool das ermöglicht uns, eine virtuelle Reise durch das Universum zu erleben und das Weltall von einem PC zu entdecken und zu erforschen. Auch wenn die Sterne auf Hawaii sehr schön anzuschauen waren, habe ich nicht die Möglichkeit gehabt, mehr über das Universum zu lernen. Aber jetzt kommt das Projekt WorldWide Telescope und macht es einfacher für uns alle über das Weltall und Astronomie zu lernen.

WorldWide Telescope ist ein Projekt von Microsoft Research und hat ein sehr leicht zu bedienendes User-Interface und hat Terabytes von Bilder und Daten. Es basiert auf der "Visual Experience Engine", die das nahtlose hinein- und heraus- zoomen aus den Bildern ermöglicht. Für die Darstellung von dem Universum werden Bilder aus Observatorien verwendet, die sich auf der ganzen Erde sowie im All befinden. Mann kann das Sonnensystem und Galaxien durchstöbern oder an geführten Touren teilnehmen, die von Astronomen oder Lehrenden großer Universitäten und Planetarien angeboten werden. Wir können auch auswählen, durch welches Teleskop wir alles schauen möchten: wie z. B. das Hubble Space Teleskop, das Chandra X-Ray Observatory Center oder das Spitzer Space Teleskop. Es gibt auch die Möglichkeit die Stellung bestimmter Planeten – in der Vergangenheit, heute und in der Zukunft – zu verfolgen oder das Universum auf unterschiedlichen Wellenlängen des Lichts zu bereisen. Es gibt auch die Möglichkeit ein Teleskop mit einem USB-Anschluß zum WorldWide Telescope anzuschließen und eine Betrachtungsliste (observation list) zu verfolgen.

Digital Lifestyle im Auto

Wie sieht das Digital Lifestyle im Auto aus? Letzte Woche habe ich mit Oliver Riekenbrauk darüber gesprochen. Er ist Marketing Manager für die Microsoft Automotive Business Group in Europa und hat mir ein Fiat Bravo gezeigt, das mit Fiats Blue&Me-System ausgerüstet ist. Blue&Me basierest auf einem Microsoft Technologie und ist ein leicht-zu-bedienendes Infotainment-System mit einem Bluetooth-System fürs Handy im Auto, ein USB-Port für den Anschluss eines MP3-Players und alles (Handy, MP3-Player und Navigationssystem) kann per Sprachbefehl gesteuert werden.

Auch ein Vorteil zu einem USB-Port im Auto, ist das das System kann einfach upgedatet werden. Jeden Tag gibt es neue Telefonen, PDAs und MP3-Playern und über diesen USB-Port kann Blue&Me nachträglich mit diesen Geräten upgegradet werden.

Blue&Me ist in Europa momentan nur in Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia und IVECO-Modellen zu haben. In Nordamerika benutzt Ford das Microsoft Auto Softwareplattform in einem Produkt namens Sync. In die Zukunft wird es weitere Automarken mit so einem Infotainment-System geben.

In diesem Video Oliver zeigt mir wie benutzerfreundlich und unkompliziert das Blue&Me System ist.

Sonntag 2.0

Gestern war Sonntag 2.0 in München, ein Mini-BarCamp zu Themen Web 2.0 und Sicherheitsaspekte. Es war Microsoft Deutschlands erstes Mal, ein BarCamp ähnliches Event zu veranstalten.

Obwohl es eine sehr kleine Runde war, war das Gespräch interessant. Ich habe zumindest etwas neues zum Thema Sicherheit gelernt. :-)

In der Zukunft werden wir versuchen, ähnliche Events zu veranstalten. Aber nächstes mit ein bisschen mehr Anlaufzeit. Ich glaube 2 Wochen Anlaufzeit war wahrscheinlich zu wenig.

Weil das Event kurzfristig geplant war, wussten wir nicht wie viele Leute kommen würden. Wir haben deswegen ein bisschen zu viel Essen bestellt und was übrig war, haben wir an der Bahnhofsmission gespendet. Ich denke die Leute da haben sich darüber gefreut. :-)

Ze Germans - In die Mongolei und Zurück

Martin Saternus hat so viel Spaß mit unserem englischen Gespräch über Mongol Rally, dass er unbedingt ein zweites Mal befragt werden wollte - aber das zweite Mal auf Deutsch. Ok, vielleicht habe ich ihn gezwungen. ;-) Aber es hat einfach Spaß gemacht, mit Richard und Martin darüber zu reden. Ich glaube es war immer mein Traum sowas ähnliches zu machen. Geeks in a Crap Car - Mongol Rally -> Photos & More

Last year in May I spoke with Martin Saternus at the STC in Duisburg about the Mongol Rally and he showed me the car that he and Richard Süselbeck would be driving from London to Ulan Bator. Martin was at the STC to raise money for two charities, so they would be able to participate in the rally. Students were given the opportunity to donate a little money to help the team out and in return they were able to sign their names on the rally car.

I traveled back to Duisburg late last year to get the scoop from Martin about the adventure and to find out if the car and signatures made it to Ulan Bator. Martin filled me in on his highlights from the trip and showed me some of his souvenirs and favorite photos from the trip.

Geeks in a Crap Car - Mongol Rally -> They made it!

Whatever happened to those two German PhD Computer Science students that took part in the Mongol Rally 2007?! Just as a reminder, the Mongol Rally is a charity event where participants drive from London to Ulan Bator in Mongolia in a crap car without a GPS or a navigation system. Well...

They made it! And in one piece!

Late last year I visited with both Martin Saternus and Richard Süselbeck to find out how the Mongol Rally 2007 went. In this video, I chat with Richard about their experience during the trip, how much money they were able to donate to charities and of course their plans for the future.

NOTE: Why is this video coming so late, you may ask? Well, some of you may remember that I had a small audio problem with some of my videos around the November and December timeframe. Ok, if you have watched some of my videos from Innovation Day in Brussels then you know that it was more than a small problem. Let’s just say that whole thing was a learning experience. Somebody changed the audio settings on the camera from auto to manual and I didn’t notice that the setting had been changed. I didn’t check it and just used the camera. Grrrrr. :-( At any rate, I had to do some extra editing on many of my videos to make them more audible. This Mongol Rally video - as well as two others that I will be posting soon - turned out well, but it just took some extra time to get them edited. By the time I was done with the editing, it was CeBIT time and I had tons of videos to shoot, edit and upload there and for a couple of weeks after. These videos unfortunately got pushed to the back of the line. I debated whether or not I should still post them but decided even though they aren't that up-to-date anymore, they are still worth a view. For any of you that love a good travel story or wonder what it would be like to travel from London to Mongolia in a less than perfect car and under adventurous circumstances, check these videos out and consider signing yourself up for Mongol Rally 2008 or 2009!

Am Vorabend von der Webinale (25. Mai) findet ein Girl Geek Dinner statt. Ein zweites Girl Geek Dinner findet im München am 4. Juni statt. Ich bin auf beide Veranstaltungen dabei.

Girl Geek Dinners sind international bereits etabliert, in Deutschland noch neu. Das Konzept basiert auf den London Girl Geek Dinners von Sarah Blow. Ein Girl Geek ist per Definition „eine weibliche Person mit Interesse an Technologie, insbesondere an Computern und Neuen Medien. Allerdings nicht zwangsläufig aus strikt technischer Perspektive, sondern die auch vor allem Technologie als Hilfsmittel sehen und keine Angst davor haben.“ Ein Girl Geek Dinner (GGD) ist ein Event bei dem diese Frauen die Chance haben sich auszutauschen, voneinander zu lernen und Frauen kennen zu lernen, die es in der IT „geschafft“ haben. Girl Geek Dinner sind nicht zwangsläufig „100% Frauen, keine Männer!“-Events, sondern Events an denen Frauen auf Augenhöhe teilnehmen und mindestens 50% der Teilnehmer stellen: Männer sind herzlich eingeladen, aber nur wenn sie von einer Frau mitgebracht werden. fmx - XNA und Serious Games

In zahlreichen Sessions auf der fmx erläuterten Microsoft-Sprecher aus Deutschland und den USA wichtige Technologien, wie beispielsweise den Einsatz von XNA Studio zur Spieleentwicklung unter Windows und auf der Xbox. Vor Ort habe ich mit Dirk Primbs, Microsoft Developer Evangelist, über fmx und XNA gesprochen. Auch dabei auf dem Microsoft-Stand war Kreativpartner Pixelpark Agentur. Sie habe ein Showcase zum Thema „Xbox Business Applications“, ein Szenario, bei dem die Xbox-Konsole für Simulationen und E-Learning-Applikationen („Edutainment“) präsentiert. Ich habe mit Dirk Krause von Pixelpark darüber geredet.

fmx & Silverlight

Vom 5. – 8. Mai fand in Stuttgart die 13. fmx Konferenz statt – Europas größte Konferenz zum Thema Animationen, Effekte, Games und Digital Media – veranstaltet von der Filmakademie Baden Württemberg. Microsoft war zum ersten Mal als einer der Hauptsponsoren mit einem großen Stand und einer Xbox-Lounge vertreten, an der sich die Besucher mit einer Tüte Popcorn bei Guitar Hero und anderen Xbox-Spielen vom Konferenzstress erholen konnten. Am Stand präsentierte Microsoft dem interessierten Publikum aus der Games-, Medien- und Designbranche neue Technologien wie Microsoft Silverlight, Microsoft Popfly und Microsoft Live Labs Photosynth.

Ich war dabei und habe vor Ort mit Steffen Ritter, Microsoft Designer Marketing Manager über alles rund um die fmx und natürlich auch über sein Lieblings-Thema Silverlight gesprochen. Auch zu sehen in diesem Video, ein paar coole Silverlight Demos, vorgestellt von Oliver Scheer, Microsoft Developer Evangelist.

At CeBIT a couple of weeks ago I got the chance to talk with two German startup companies that were there to present their innovative products.

Benjamin Fritsch from VIOSO filled me in on their Smartprojecting product that makes it possible to adapt any projection and show it on any surface. The Smartprojecting system consists of a camera, a computer and a projector and the correction of the content is done right before it is projected. The geometric and color distortions as they would appear with normal projection can be dramatically reduced and the correction works pixel accurate.

Andreas Wiratanaya from CanControls showed me their facial recognition wheelchair with a video-based facial expression controller. CanControls specializes in digital image processing for advanced man-machine interaction. The wheelchair software analyzes the facial expressions and gestures of the driver and can be controlled by actions such as blinking, tilting of the head or opening of the mouth.

I spoke with Nikolai Roth from zweitgeist at the CeBIT in Hannover a couple of weeks ago. He showed me their product called Weblin, which is software that enables people on the same web page to see and communicate with each other. While you are surfing, you and others on the same web page are visible to each other as small avatars and you are able to interact and chat with each other. The idea behind Weblin is to make the Internet come alive and create the largest virtual world of all. Nikolai filled me in on how Weblin works and what kinds of features are available.

Imagine Cup 2008 - Auf nach Paris!

Ich habe mit Henrike Röse, Academic Event Manager bei Microsoft über den Imagine Cup gesprochen. Der Imagine Cup ist der weltweit größte Technologiewettbewerb für Schüler und Studierende ab 16 Jahren. Microsoft richtet diesen Wettbewerb bereits zum 6. Mal in Folge aus und jährlich werden es mehr Teilnehmer die ihren Ideen und ihrer Kreativität freien Lauf lassen und ihre Projekte in einer der 9 Kategorien einreichen.

Neben internationalem Networking (im vergangenen Jahr waren rund 100 Nationen aus der ganzen Welt vertreten!) gibt es wertvolle Sach- und Geldpreise in Höhe von bis zu 15.000 US$ und eine Reise zum weltweiten Finale im Juli nach Paris zu gewinnen!

Es gibt sowohl technologische Kategorien wie Software Design und Game Development aber auch Design-Kategorien wie Kurzfilm, Fotografie oder Interface Design.

Der Wettbewerb steht jedes Jahr unter einem Motto: nach den Themen Gesundheit und Bildung in den letzten Jahren lautet das diesjährige Motto: "gesündere Umwelt und besserer Umweltschutz durch Technologie"

Mitmachen kann man jetzt noch in folgenden Kategorien: Fotografie: einfach bis zum 2.Mai 2008 eine Fotoserie von bis zu 10 Bildern zum Thema Umwelt auf deinen Windows live space hochladen !

Oder bei den Sonderawards der Kategorien Software Design und Interface Design teilnehmen.

CeBIT '08 - Stephan Walcher & Live Writer Blog

Stephan Walcher ist Microsoft-MVP und leidenschaftlicher Blogger. Er führt unter anderem den populären Live Writer-Blog in drei Sprachen: Deutsch, Italienisch und Englisch und verfügt vermutlich über die größte Plugin-Sammlung für Live Writer außerhalb der Windows Live Writer Plugin Gallery – darunter Plug-Ins für Video-Einbettung, Integration der IMDB (Internet Movie Database), Übersetzung und viele andere Sachen – und kennt die deutsche Bloggerszene seit den Anfängen. CeBIT '08 - Digital Lifestyle

Auf dem Consumer Catwalk der CeBIT habe ich mich mit Markus Oeller über Digital Lifestyle und schicke Fashion-PCs mit großen Displays für Hi-Fidelity-Entertainment „on the road“ unterhalten. Markus zeigt mir verschiedene stylische Notebooks – beispielsweise im Fell- oder Lederdesign. Wir plaudern außerdem über das vernetzte Wohnzimmer mit Xbox, Windows Live, Windows Home Server und Video on Demand via Media Center – und natürlich sprechen wir kurz über den sexy Eee-PC (*I want one – the next version with Windows, though!*).

Weltfrauentag - CeBIT 2008

Zum Weltfrauentag am 8. März habe ich auf der CeBIT mit verschiedenen Frauen gesprochen, die alle erfolgreich in der IT-Branche arbeiten. Sie berichten von ihren Erfahrungen und den Vor- und Nachteilen die man als Frau in der Männerdomäne IT erlebt – aber alle sind sich einig: Frauen habt keine Angst vor der IT-Welt – Just do it!

Meine Gesprächspartnerinnen: Carola Pantenburg ist seit 16 Jahren Referentin auf technischen Konferenzen wie der CeBIT, Christine Stumpf ist Gründerin des StartUps Zweitgeist und Diplom-Informatikerin Manuela Miller arbeitet in einem großen IT-Consulting-Unternehmen an komplexen Projekten. Esther Nawotka arbeitet beim IT-Jobportal MSEmploy und gibt hilfreiche Tipps, wie sich Frauen für technische Jobs bewerben können.

CeBIT '08 - Silverlight & WPF UX

Auf dem Bayern Innovativ-Stand konnte ich mich mit Bernhard Pichler von Informare unterhalten. Bernhard war auf der CeBIT um zu demonstrieren, wie die User Experience von Software mit Microsoft-Technologien wie Silverlight und WPF verbessert werden kann. Er zeigte mir verschiedene Demos, die Infomare entwickelt hat, unter anderem einen Hemden-Konfigurator und ein Fotobuch.

Parallel zur CeBIT fand in Las Vegas zum dritten Mal die Microsoft MIX-Konferenz statt – die große Microsoft-Konferenz rund um die Themen Webdesign, Webentwicklung und Online Business. Mein Kollege Steffen Ritter war vor Ort und berichtet von den Highlights der MIX 08. Wer wissen will, wie „Surface“ und „Cirque du Soleil“ korrekt ausgesprochen werden, wie man Scott Guthrie zum Jonglieren bringt, oder was passiert wenn Steve Ballmer und Guy Kawasaki gemeinsam auf der Bühne stehen, der sollte sich dieses Video ansehen. CeBIT '08 - Mixed Reality

At the CeBIT in Hannover, Germany I spoke with Noora Guldemond from metaio about their "mixed" reality products. Metaio is a small startup company from Munich, Germany that develops augmented reality concepts and solutions. Augmented reality is a technology that allows virtual 3D information to be superimposed seamlessly onto a real environment at real-time. metaio's products and services include professional software and hardware solutions for a wide range of applications and consultancy services ranging from selecting a system to process integration. In this video Noora explains how augmented reality works and shows me 3 of the cool demos that they had on hand at the CeBIT and I had tons of fun pretending that I was Harry Potter for a few minutes.
