WOAH. I'm a UW researcher, and I just linked to this page off the UW homepage (which, by the way, recently got a big facelift and now is a frequently-updated source of really interesting continent, especially for Seattle residents... check it out at www.washington.edu ).

I think I was actually in that room on the same day you posted this video (which I guess means you were likely there a day or so before). I was there by random happenstance, and was wondering if there was some way for me to check out the cool simulators in action. What an awesome and unexpected surprise to find this video!!

I really love the site so far, excellent mix of learning and fun. That's the way it ought to be.

Tendencies maybe, but I don't think that amounts to personality. Maybe just 25% of it or so... like how high-strung you are, what basic aptitudes you have, and a few other quirks.

I think most of the personality traits we share with our parents come from the fact that they raised us.

Nurture all the way, baby. Nature is important too, but not as much as people think these days, in the age of genetics.

Clones should still have all normal human rights. Nobody can own a cloned human being, and the person who creates a clone must have the same responsibilities as a parent would. And the parent can't be a corporation. A *PERSON* has to step up and take responsibility the way a parent would. Anything else would be way wrong.

And plus, the person who is being cloned (or his/her heirs, if deceased) must have the final rights to A) not get cloned if he/she doesn't want to, and B) be the clones parent if he/she wants to. I think that's pretty basic.

Now all we'd have to contend with is black-market cloning! :)

Heehee. What a fun mental exercise. Sounds crazy now but in a few years, who knows!

I'm interested to hear other thoughts about it.

Well, to kick this back to Laura and Tina's roots, the gaming world....I'd say I get my Constitution, Strength, and Intellect rolls from my parents. But Wisdom, Charisma, Class, experience, and Lightside/Darkside (if we're playing KOTOR) are going to come from MY life... :)

I'm not saying my clone would be UNLIKE me, just that it would not BE me. I don't know - maybe I was tired of some of the stupid arguments I've heard against cloning, and got my rebuttal out there before anyone actually offended. :) Sure, the personality of my clone would be influenced by my "stats," but it wouldn't some sort of souless, identity-lacking doppelganger with no free will and no rights, which are all some of the more ridiculous things I've heard against cloning...

This would be a trick question as we all know you are Tina's clone.... I think there are different levels of cloning, naturally one could even argue twins are clones so it doesn't bother me THAT much. I would have to ask why would you want to clone in the first place??? THen depending on the response i would argue for or against it.... but whatever. As for stem cells I'm all for it. Stem cells are bad ass, it's like the holy grail.

Now if we bring back the dinosaurs (which, I doubt, since many scientists agree that Chrichton's idea, while cool, is not possible) and other prehistoric creatures...I guess I would have to disagree with the cloning idea, completely.

And if we ever start seeing cloning being taken to extreme measures, such of as creating hybrids of humans and animals, then let us hope there won't be a real Planet of the Apes, or a "Pigmen" army (as Krammer from Seinfeld once suggested).

And as for cloning, I'm also not really for it. I don't know what "good" it would do. Unless a family wants to bring back a family member, even though it wont really be the "same" family member (except for the genetic make-up).

Basically, just think of the clone as a twin. Although, your clone won't look like you right away, as it has to grow up to an adult.

So, yeah, your "clone" will probably out-live you and if that's a reason for a clone...that's fine, I guess. I just don't want to see a real "Clone Wars."

We have seen some of the "effects" of cloning on animals (Dolly, the sheep) and while other cloning attempts have been more successful with pets, for example, there is still a risk that something could go very wrong during the cloning process, especially with humans.

WOW great topic today! I say sure to stem cell and cloning. Why not! I think there is far too many benifets to both and unless we research it we will never know. Cloning i can think of too many benifets. For those out there that have no known family, right there would be the bone marrow or rare blood type. Id also like the think that maybe the wait on the organ trasnplant list would grow shorter as well.

As for nature vs. nurture just take a look at identical twins. Yes they may experience the same things growing up together but what they take away from that experience may be totaly different. So it wouldnt bother me to have a clone. Yes we might be geniticaly the same but no we would not be. Memorys and childhood scars can not be cloned.

Blah sorry for the short post...i didnt expect to be posting but great topic today. I just could help but to post. Now if i had a clone SHE could cut the grass...lol

I've seen many documentaries and news reports to convince me that stem-cell research is necessary and has a very, promising future.

I don't want to get into a debate of ethics and science, but for those that totally oppose stem-cells...all I have to say is: Michael J. Fox, Christopher Reeve and many other people who are/had been suffering from terrible diseases and medical conditions.

Fox's and Reeve's commitment to get support of stem-cell research, I think is a good enough reason to be (at least) open-minded to the idea of stem-cells and their potential.

I understand the controversy of using embryonic stem-cells. As I mentioned, I don’t want to get into a science and religion debate with anyone, but I do wish our President would support stem-cells more than he has.

Well, I totally support stem cell research. I understand the debates on both sides of the issue and I respect them. Having said that, I also sway to the "yes" side, basically, because of the HUGE potential it has for many people (including, myself).

I mentioned a while back that I have a lung disease and other than getting a lung transplant some day, I'm hoping they'll be able to grow new lungs from stem-cells (and I hope it will happen in my life time).

So, while growing new organs and other body parts might sound kind of creepy, I think it needs to happen and I'm sure it will indeed help millions of people out there.

Your statement sounds like you believe in 100% nurture. Can't say I agree. Do you not think your clone, being an exact genetic copy of you, wouldn't have personality tendencies? Do you have any traits that your parents also have? Where did those come from? Nature perhaps?

I made the same point as you, except I don't believe cloning yourself is necessarily the right thing to do. Ethics asside, have you ever considered going with the "Jagno Fett" method and raising a son who was your biological double? It's an interesting prospect. Being women, Tina and Laura could even choose to carry and bear their own biologically identical daughters.

I'm not against much of anything. Clone away! You can't create a duplicate "you," because environment and experience decide those things - all you can do is create someone who's genetically identical. So why not?

And if I COULD create a duplicate, fully formed clone of myself? That'd be great. After all, I'm pretty cool. The world could use more of me. We'd go into business together and kick some ass.

I wouldn't rule out cloning, it would all depend on the reason why... I'd probably be against cloning a person just because it would be really cool... but I'd have to assume there would be a really good reason to justify the cost. Tell me that reason and I could be convinced :)

I'm a "no" on cloning and a "maybe" on stem cell. I like the potential help it could have, but am still iffy on whether or not it's right. For me it all comes down to, where's the line of where life begins? I don't have an answer, so I won't say yay or nay. My answer is worthless. ;)

Everyone so far seems to be a "no" on cloning. What about if they could clone human organs? Yes? No? Personally, I would go for "yes", but I'm curious to hear what others think.

Cloning a complete human is a "No". Your clone may not be you, only the potential to become you. It would depend on how she was raised and what she experienced. Copying a complete sentient being is wrong. It depends on why we would want to clone and what purpose it served. Still, could you imagine going the "Jango Fett" method and raising a daughter that was in fact your biological double? You could even choose to carry and bear her yourself.

I support stem cell research and think its a "yes". We live in a universe of potentials. There is no guarantee that developing cells will become a child, only the potential to become a child. There's no reason why we should not harness potentials to serve our needs; we do it all the time. So long as we don't create sentient life or allow an embryo to exceed the first term of development, I see no reason why we shouldn't pursue such research.

Hehe. That was a great segment. It was probably the best example of what the 10 show is all about. Not only did you show us some fantastc medical techology and how it's improving lives, but we learned two great lessons and got to see the two of you dressed in scrubs - how cute.
