Donavon from Home Server Hacks has put together instructions on how to build a tiny little Windows Home Server using an ARTiGO Pico-ITX kit. It's an interesting read and an especially good pick if your main concern is low power consumption - the Pico uses a staggering 13-watts of power at idle. While the board isn't the most plug and play compatible hardware out there for Home Server, this will show you how to make it work.

And if you're not so handy, Donavon is giving this one away to a lucky commentor. You have until Sunday January 11th to enter.

[Note: Just to be clear, leaving a comment here will get you nothing but my admiration. To actually enter this contest, head over to Donavon's blog and leave a comment there.]

So, a Home Server would be nice. Instant restore from failing hard drives!

It might making a failing hard drive kinda fun....so let me win one of these Wink.

That ARTiGO Pico-ITX kit seems perfect for a home server. I wasn't aware of it, or aware you could build your own and get the OS...

This is exstatically neat.
Home server on a Pico-ITX sounds nice Smiley
I find that the HP home servers (the only ones sold in my country) are very large for what they actually do.
I sure would like to win one of these as well Wink
I've been thinking about reusing an old desktop to act as a Home Server, however this machine sounds like a small jet engine and uses almost as much energy. A nice little quiet machine would be ideal, but the ARTiGO Pico ITX machine could be a little too little. I've not seen anyone comment on the noise levels coming from the HP server.

Code Hard, Play Harder
Wow, that's a really great idea. I've always wanted to switch to WHS, but the size of the HP has always daunted me. This pico mod is a great concept... just stack it with the switches and routers, and skip another tower setup entirely. Will definitely follow!

Usually size isn't much of a problem for me as long as it's quiet but I haven't been able to justify setting up a second machine for running WHS because it would add to the noise considering none of the old parts I have lying around are anywhere near as quiet as my main machine.

Quiet computing is important to me so a little machine like that would be perfect. I researched parts at http://www.silentpcreview.com for a while before building my current computer.

This is awesome!

Low power consumption is a good point I would look forward to.

I would love to win one!
Greetings everyone. I'm a new member of this site. I have one quick question right off: how does one enter for a contest like this?
Hm a Green Home Server, would be cool to win one. Or in other words: please, please i want it!!! I always wanted a WHS and with the 13 watts the ARTiGO Pico-ITX seems to be perfect.

Manuel
It's small footprint and energy consumption is quite impressive! Well done on all fronts!
