When I was a kid, we didn't have your fancy MP3s and 5.1 stereo surround sound on our computers. We had little beeps and clicks that you had to lean into to hear.
And we liked it.
If you're old enough to remember that PC Speaker beep, you may be wondering what happened to it. Officially, it's gone in Windows 7 64bit.
Larry Osterman explains
why in his weblog and it's an interesting story of how we couldn't get rid of the beep when we wanted to, but eventually changed in a round about way because of servers.
Ironically, the server admins are
some of the people
wishing PC speakers and the Beep function would be restored to help find machines in server farms.
