Sure you know your component from your composite and your CardSpace from your CableCard, who doesn't, right? But if your day gig is setting up A/V equipment, how does a potential employer or customer know that? And you probably thought that Microsoft Certified Professional exams were for those monad scripters on Channel 9, well - not so. Microsoft has MCP exams for technologists too.

Right now you can register to take the beta of the Windows Vista Connected Experience: Home Theater for Technologists exam and get a professional accredidation that shows you know how to design and build a solution for home theater systems based on the Windows Vista platform. The cost for these exams is normally $125 and can be taken at any Prometric testing center like other certifications, but since this is a beta you can take it for free. Yes, you will get a certificate if you pass, but because this is a beta you won't know right away if you passed or not. It's a great deal and you have nothing to lose so give it a try.

To take the test, just use this code: PAGHT.

will it take some time for it to show up in the system?  i tried to go register for it but the course was not listed.

Since this is a beta exam, it shows up under Prometric as 71-625, you have to scroll down to see it.

i see it now...  just one more followup.  how long will this free offer last?  my local testing center only has 2 days available currently listed and both are next week.  i was hoping to find a date a bit further off but dont want to wait too long where the free offer might expire.

also would there be any recommended studying material (other than the e-learning courses listed in the link).  there are no official practice tests (the whole beta thing i assume).  just wondering what kind of questions would be asked since htpc can be alot of things.

You think a week is short notice, I just booked one for Saturday as my local testing center has nothing else this year! :O, this is gonna be fun Smiley
Very cool!  I didn't know that this exam existed.  Thanks for sharing Larry!

Checking for you, should be okay though as long as you get it scheduled while it's free.

This beta is scheduled to run until Feb 15. There is a chance it will be extended another month after that, but right now Feb 15 is the cut off for it being free.
Is this open to people in the UK as well ? also do you just use the code when you book?
Yes, the code works almost worldwide. When you register for the exam at Prometric there will be an option to use a promotional code.
