Yea it's going to take them a while but they have to figure that out. Ultimately they'll be comfortable being just a pipe, particularly when you consider that all their revenue-generating nonsense is wrapped around driving network traffic.

I don't suppose phone companies will ever get to the point of just being ISP's for handsets will they?

So I could pay them for internet access on their network, but that's it. No "phone bill" per say.

Exactly! It's all made extra easy if you get a Skype handset, though you'll only be making calls on open WiFi networks.
