Microsoft Communities
Posted By: Duncan Mackenzie | Sep 29th, 2006 @ 10:46 AM
Hey folks, Brian and I managed to get our hands on some pre-production Zunes and we thought you might want to see them!
We decided to show off one particular feature, the ability to share music and photos between two Zunes over a wireless network. I brought along some Canadian tunes to share with my American friend (The Odds!) and I also forced him to look at some of my family photos. Watch the video and let us know what you think!
We will be interviewing someone from the Zune team next week so let us know what questions we should ask, or any particular feature that you'd like to see covered.

Hey guys.   You lack the most necessary thing to get the tipping point happening.  Community!  Forget this $25 discount to MS employees.  Distribute it free to us all so we can get out there in the world and start demonstrating the power of community!

All music..

Even if it is not DRM'd that doesn't necessarily give you the right to share it (consider a CD you rip using Windows Media Player, no DRM but still not something you can give away without any restriction). Yes, there will be some music that has no restrictions on its usage, but I don't believe there is any easy way to distinguish between the two types of content.

Is the play restriction only for DRM / purchased music or all music/podcasts/prodcasts?  Pictures are exempt from the restriction, correct?

I believe so... if you have a subscription, and the shared song is from the marketplace, then I think you get a different experience. We'll ask the Zune dude during our Tuesday interview.

Of course, that 3 days, 3 plays is just for music that has been sent to you from another person's zune. With a subscription you have no 3 days, 3 plays restriction on music that you downloaded from the marketplace and sync'd onto your Zune.

That's pretty cool... If you sign up for the monthly subscription to zune can you get more than 3 days or 3 plays or transfered music???

Wouldn't that be something..."WiiZune"

I could see that.  I wouldn't mind a joint venture between Microsoft and Nintendo.  Nintendo of America is located just a few blocks down from the Microsoft campus. :)

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to acknowledge my question as to the meaning of Zune, Adam.  As I said, I support the name and brand, I was just a little annoyed that some of the posters here lambasted Nintendo for their name of choice.  I thought It was kind of clever.

Erik said iPod was a relevant name though...

i = information
pod = a miniture self contained vessel
iPod = a miniture self contained information vessel. hehe

True, nobody waking up from a comma would have any idea what we were talking about...but still, iPod is a little clearer than "Zune."

How can anybody that loves the-newest-coolest-thing call any feature of the newest-coolest-product: "kind'a cool", "neat" or even "awesome" while looking into the camera like they are waiting to have a root canal?

Look lively lads; this is the newest-coolest-product isn't it?

"Rush is not the only Canadian band..."

Technically this is true, but they are the only good Canadian band.

"So I'm gonna go down (pause) and find their song Heterosexual Man, (pause) which I like."

Um, yeeeeaaaaaaaah. Even when I didn't pull that quote out of context and paste it into this reply, it sounds--uh, you know. A little kinda... uh,

I'm just sayin' I would've personally loved to see a reaction shot from Brian at that point in the video.

Can you share files?

Say i have a word document that i want to bring into work and give to a coworker, can i put a file on the device and send it to his Zune device with mine?

If i was able to do this i would buy one, no more damn usb disks.

I like "Zune" and I like "Wii", even better I like "WiiiiiZune"!

In this day and age, names are very difficult and creating a brand from a word with no meaning appears simpler.  If you came out of a 10-year coma and someone said,"I need to get my iPod out of my car", would you know what they meant?

The other option would be "Microsoft Portable Media Wireless Sharing Player 2006" :p

Great segment, Duncan.  So...that is Microsoft's answer to the iPod.  It looks rather bulky and simple, but I like the ability to turn it on its side and watch videos in widescreen.  Sharing files wirelessly will be awesome and I applaud Microsoft's ingenuity there, coming up with something that isn't a blatent ripoff.

"Zune"...WTF  kind of name is that?  Nintendo got a lot of BS for calling their next console "Wii"...especially from here...and now Microsoft is poised to release "Zune."  Forgive me, but that seems rather hypocritical to me.  I'm not against the name at all...and I'm sure no one here will be either, but I think that's a rather hypocritical idea.  People wanted to know what "Wii" meant...now I'm asking....What does "Zune" mean?

I'd like to see more of the Zune interface and physical model.  I didn't get a good idea of its physical size and appearence from this video, so I'd like to see more of it.  I'd also like to see what programs it works with.  Thanks.
