There's no doubt that there is plenty of so-called HD content out there that isn't worthy of the name -- not to mention a broadcast radio technology that has nothing to do with definition at all -- but it seems that trying to comprise a specific definition of HD is simply an exercise in futility.

I'm not sure what point you're attempting to make here, since my reply to Ben has nothing to do with interlaced video or resolution; I'm merely proposing that an objective video quality algorithm is a much better criteria to use than bitrate w/r/t quality.

Whether the video is interlaced/has undergone 3-2 pulldown/has a funny aspect ratio is irrelevant so long as the objective video quality algorithm is applied against the frames that are submitted to the video encoder, and the encoder itself isn't performing any of this action (hopefully not--it makes more sense to have it be a separate step entirely)

By your own definition, then, 1080i is not HD since it's easily comparable to 720p due to its interlaced nature. A 3:2 pull down needs to be performed on 1080i content by 720p monitors in order to successfully de-interlace it and display it properly. The same would need to be done on a 1080p monitor; said content would have to be scaled one war or another.

The HD sizes are anamorphic, the SD is square pixel.
