Inside the Microsoft booth at CES is a row of computers that we call Muscle Beach. These are some of the latest PCs from partners that will be coming out over the next year. I'm really impressed this year with some of the forward thinking features hardware companies are coming out with, like the dual monitor netbook shown here. My favorite had to be the Pegatron slate though. This device shown in the keynote has an 11.6" screen with an Atom processor, 1GB RAM and 32GB HDD. It's so light and portable, it would be perfect to carry around the house for reading and remoting into the other PC's around my house via Mesh. With so many different types of devices, there's something for everyone.

If there's any geek in you at all, you've probably put together a combination of technology that fits your lifestyle and personality, whether it's a modest MP3 player and speaker dock, or an executive server room like Bob Muglia rocks. From Scott Hanselman's crib to Hakan Olsson's big TV, to Ori Amiga's Mesh Mobile, geeks love their tech.

Today we take a look at Mark Pendergrast's house, a 1920s home in Seattle. Mark is Senior Product Manager of Windows Home Server so of course his renovated basement and "Guinness Cam" are tied together through his Home Server. Check it out and tell us whose home setup you'd like to see next.

According to the Windows Live Sync blog, the service now supports Mac’s latest operating system, Snow Leopard. Those running that version of OSX can download the Sync software right here.

For those of you who don’t know, Windows Live Sync (formerly known as FolderShare) is a free file synchronization application that keeps files and folders in sync between multiple PCs. The app is similar to Windows Live Mesh in that regard, and also like Live Mesh, files can be accessed from the web as well as from the desktop. One of the main differences between the two services is that Mesh also includes a remote desktop component. Also, in Mesh, files can be “meshified” (added to your Mesh) upon right-click in Windows Explorer. In Sync, however, you have to specifically select folders and files to sync by adding them to the application. You’re also limited to 20 folders containing 20,000 files each and individual files cannot be bigger than 4 GB. Mesh, on the other hand, doesn’t have these limits – the only limit is on the “cloud” aspect. Mesh’s “Live Desktop” offers 5 GB of free storage.

Still, Sync is good alternative for those who are looking for a slightly simpler synchronization tool and don’t need online storage, only online access to files.

To try Windows Live Sync for yourself, visit sync.live.com to get started.

The online service YouSendIt is a popular destination for sharing large files over the web. They also offer an Outlook plugin and a newer Microsoft Office plugin which integrates the YouSendIt service into all the Office programs. This type of service is useful since the majority of email servers and services have limits on the size of files which can be attached to a message as well as limits on the size of incoming messages which can be received. But as any business user knows, sharing files – often multiple, large files – is a part of their everyday work life. (Though Mesh is a great option for this too.)

Recently, the YouSendIt announced a new feature for the Outlook plugin that makes file sharing via email even easier than before. With their latest Outlook plugin, you now have the ability to send entire folders via email with just one click. These folders can be as large as 2 gigabytes in size, too! You’re also able to configure Outlook to automatically send files over a certain size via YouSendIt or you can have it prompt you instead.

According to a June 2009 study from Osterman Research, the average worker sends and receives 44,700 e-mails per year, 29 percent of which have file attachments.  Of those attachments, 45 percent are larger than 10 MB, so there’s a clear use case for implementing YouSendIt in a business environment.

Microsoft already has a strong Twitter presence with numerous teams maintaining accounts on the microblogging social network, but until now there wasn’t an overall account for the company as a whole. On Wednesday, though, that changed as @microsoft went live on Twitter. The account is maintained by four members of the corporate communications team and it currently looks like more of a feed of Microsoft-related news than an attempt to read and respond to incoming @ replies. (Although that hasn’t stopped a slew of folks from tweeting to @Microsoft).

Instead, if you’re looking for a little more personal interaction – or at the very least, more targeted news – you may be better off following one of these specific Microsoft-owned Twitter accounts:

A new service called Eduify launched on the Windows Azure platform. This service is designed to help students with their writing by providing tutorials, samples, and information about how to verify and cite sources in research papers. Edufiy also adds a social element to the writing process as users can interact with their online friends via Facebook Connect integration, allowing for a more collaborative writing experience.

The Eduify service also addresses the need for students to have tools that more accurately reflect their modern, online lifestyles. In Eduify, for example, students can pull in online research from around the web and then prepare their paper in a web-based workspace that’s accessible from a computer or mobile phone.  There are some great features in Eduify, too,  like its ability to automatically create a bibliography. Later on, the company will add a paid document editing/proofreading service as well. Even further down the road, there are plans to integrate Windows Live Messenger and Live Mesh technologies in the service.

At the moment, Eduify is in beta, which makes sense as Windows Azure itself is still a CTP (Community Technical Preview). The company gained access to the Azure Platform after joining the Microsoft BizSpark program, a program which aims to help startups get off the ground by providing them with free tools and services for a set period of time. This allows them the breathing room they need to build a scalable and sustainable business without having to worry about those traditional startup costs.

Anyone interested in participating in the beta can sign up for an invite here from the Eduify homepage.

Windows Live Sync, the file sharing and synchronization service, (no, not that one, the other one) has officially joined the Windows Live set of applications with the latest revamp of the service. According to the team blog post, Live Sync “has a new look,” but it seems that it’s more than just a cosmetic makeover. Now it’s clear the service is meant to be a part of Windows Live. When you visit the new site at sync.live.com, you’ll see that it’s just another node on your Windows Live network of services now, along with Photos, Mail, SkyDrive, etc.[Click to read the full post ]

Windows Live FrameIt, software that delivers photos and more to your compatible digital picture frames, was recently updated to include Facebook integration. When you go to add a photo-sharing site to FrameIt, you’ll see Facebook is now an option along with SmugMug, Photobucket, and others. Click on the “FacebooK” option and you’ll be prompted via a Facebook Connect dialog box to allow access to your photo collections. After you grant access, you’ll be able to specify whether you want to see photos from a particular album or just the photos where you’ve been tagged. You can then optionally configure more settings like age of photos, display schedule, etc.[Click to read the full post ]

The most recent update to Windows Live Mesh has added a new and useful feature to the Live Mesh Desktop called “Media Viewer.” With this, you can open rich media files – like photos and videos – right from your desktop found at mesh.com. The Silverlight player has built-in controls for pausing videos and making them go full screen, but it doesn’t yet include any advanced seek options like rewind, fast forward, or a slider. However, it does have two arrows - one on each side - which will take you to either the next or the previous video in your Live Mesh folder...[Click to read the full post ]

[Stay tuned, Laura Foy is meeting with these folks and will have a video soon.] Microsoft Research will be debuting a prototype called Social Desktop at the annual TechFest event being held next week. This software offers a new take on cloud computing, blending the PC and the web in a completely new way. It does this by giving every document living on your computer a URL that points to its location on the web – and without having to copy, move, or upload the file in any way.

In addition, the URL provides a way to build in social experiences around the file by enabling comments, tags, and related items to appear on the file’s “homepage.” As friends comment on the file in their web browser, the conversation becomes available in Windows, too. The file links that you want to share can also be distributed via Digg, Twitter, and Windows Live Messenger...

If you’re already using Windows Live Mesh to keep your files and photos between PCs in sync, then you don’t really need to worry with using Windows Live Sync (formerly called FolderShare). However, if you never installed the beta Mesh software and you’re just looking for a simple solution to keep your photos synced between PCs, the new Windows Live Sync Photo Gallery integration may be the better choice for you.

After installing Windows Live Photo Gallery (a part of the new Windows Live Essentials suite) on two computers, you can then set them up to sync with each other. To do so, click Setup gallery sync…from the File Menu in Photo Gallery and follow the instructions provided. (You’ll need to be signed in with your Windows Live ID first).

Brian Gorbett recently posted about his new Mesh-enabled application that he's now made available – a Windows Live Mesh video player. The video player is based on the Silverlight video player available on Codeplex, with one big difference –it’s been meshified! You can download the source code from Brian’s web site. What’s even better though, is that he has just updated his original post with a link that lets you install the player into your CTP Mesh without having to download the source...[Click to read the full post ]

Last Christmas Santa Claus brought me a digital photo frame. It was one of the models that displays photos from an SD card that you slot into the base of the frame. I had a spare SD card lying around so I put it into my PC and transferred some photos over from a recent holiday and then put the frame on a bookshelf.
12 months later and the frame still has the same photos repeating on an endless loop... sure I could pull out the SD card and put some new photos on there but it would be MUCH easier if I could just log into a web service and tell the frame to pull photos from my Flickr account, Windows Live Photo Gallery and Live Mesh,.. maybe even display the latest weather or news headlines? Imagine that,....

Windows Live Sync is the new name of the service formerly known as FolderShare which lets you keep a pair of folders synced across multiple devices. Some have found the similarities between Live Sync and Live Mesh confusing since they both do similar things, so the best way to understand the difference is that Live Sync only keeps folders in sync, whereas Live Mesh does that and more – it offers an online desktop with free storage and lets you easily remote into your various devices. Still, Live Mesh is beta software and that’s not for everyone. Plus, FolderShare had many fans before Live Mesh was even available, so why not keep them happy?[Click to read the full post ]

The Live Mesh team recently announced that Live Mesh for Mobile is now available for all countries, so everyone can try it out. Since the mobile service initially launched back on October 30th, the team has updated Live Mesh for Mobile to address many of the reported issues that users had submitted. With those issues out of the way, the mobile version was then ready for wider testing. Although anyone can try Live Mesh for Mobile now, it is worth noting that it works better on 3G networks.

If you want to try it out, you had better hurry: there are only a limited number of spots available. To sign up...

Blockbuster announced today that they are teaming up with Microsoft on a set of new mobile services that will let customers watch movies on any device with an internet connection. Some of those services will be powered by Live Mesh, a platform that allows for synchronization of data between devices.

Because Live Mesh is open to anyone wanting to use its technology for sharing data, any 3rd party developer can take advantage of the opportunities provided to build their own apps, which is precisely what Blockbuster intends to do....
