Customized Outlook Conversations View

Would you like a way to keep track of all the conversations that you initiated in your Outlook email? This can be done by combining an Outlook view with a search folder. Follow the steps below and you will have a folder that shows your email as conversation threads:

  1. Create a new search folder (New -> Search Folder)
  2. Specify Inbox and Sent items as the only folders to include in the search, but don't specify any search criteria. The search folder will show all items from the Inbox and the Sent Items folder.
  3. Create a new view by copying the "Messages" view (In Outlook 2003 - View, Arrange By, Current View, Define Views, then copy the "Messages" view)
  4. In the view, select the option to Group by "Conversation" and Sort by "Conversation index."
  5. Click the Filter button and go to the SQL tab.
  6. Check the "Edit these criteria directly" checkbox.
  7. Copy and paste the DASL filter from below, changing the text "your name" to your actual name:

"urn:schemas:httpmail:fromname" = 'Your Name' OR(("urn:schemas:httpmail:displayto" LIKE '%Your Name%' OR"urn:schemas:httpmail:displaycc" LIKE '%Your Name%') AND("urn:schemas:httpmail:subject" LIKE 'RE:%' OR "urn:schemas:httpmail:subject" LIKE 'AW:%'))

    8. Apply the new view on the newly created search folder

FYI: To get the filter button (isn't on the tool bar by default and right-clicking a search folder doesn't show the SQL tab in Outlook 2007) folow these steps on Andrew Delin's WebLog.

To solve this problem I created a rule that copies any email I send to the Inbox before it is actually sent. I think this is much easier ....

Outlook gurus,

Can anyone help me set up a filter that only shows the most recent mail in a conversation or a thread? More specifically I am trying to have only the most recenttly updated appointment/meeting appear in my "search folder" that disdlays all calendar items, because it is very irritating to have to sift through the unwanted "this request is out-of-date" items before getting to the most recent update of a meeting, which is the only only I need to take action on. In short, I simply want to filter out stale meeting notices from my calendar search folder.

Can one of you Outlook gurus help me with this situation:

1. I have an Outlook search folder for displaying all my calendar items like meetings.

2. The problem is that meetings are frequently updated several times, and only the most recent request needs my attention.

3. This can be hard to locate, because Outlook displays all versions of the request including stale ones with the messae "this request is out-of-date" in the status or information bar

4. This is very irritating as I have to manually search through the folder for the latest version of all the various meeting requests.


Is there a way to filter out stale requests from my calendar folder and leave only the latest updates in it?

I am grouping by conversation (ascending), sorting by Received (ascending) which is the way I want it, i.e. newest conversation appears at the top but within each conversation the earliest date eamil is shown first.  This way I can read the thread starters email first.

The only problem is when I select this folder outlook automatically takes me to the bottom of the conversations, I always want to be at the top with the newest conversation without having to slide all the way back up again.

Any ideas anyone?
