Ever since its first beta release in August 2006, I've been a big fan of Windows Live Writer. Windows Live Writer is a fully featured Windows blogging client with support for spell checking, WYSIWYG editing, picture uploading and custom plug-ins (with a full SDK). In addition to the expected Windows Live Spaces support, it also supports a ton of other blogging engines including a generic metaweblog api setting that I can use to blog on both on10.net and duncanmackenzie.net!

With the 1.0 release it seemed like a good time to learn a bit more about this app, so I sat down with Becky Pezely from the Windows Live Writer team and got all the details. Check out the video for yourself, learn all about this cool product, then scoot over to download the 1.0 version. Don't stop there though, check out all the great plug-ins available for Windows Live Writer and if you are a Flickr user, make sure to grab Tim Heuer's Flick4Writer plug in (that I mention in the video) and insert your flickr photos into Writer with the greatest of ease!

As with many such useful bits of software it will come down to unconventional blog sites integrating it.

Also that WLW isn't quite as indespensible as say notepad. Perhaps if notepad could be upgraded with some of WLW features NOTEPAD would be even more indespensible.

Please, please, please provide a downloadable installer for this stuff.  I'm behind a proxy which your installer can't negotiate. Ironically enough it's a Microsoft ISA Proxy, but it won't let a connection for your installer through.  I'd love to install some of the new Live bits, but I can't get to them.

I just wish Live Writer had 3 quick features:

1. Different fonts

2. Fonts sizes

3. Smileys/emoticons (but please be different than the ones seen on WLM/MSN)

Then I'll be really happy. Wish they would do that.

quikboy - Try the following to address your questions about fonts and sizes:

a. In the menu bar, click Format, and then click Font.

b. This will display the Font window that allows you to change the font, style, size, and color.

There are numerous fonts and sizes that you can choose from to allow you to customize your post.

You could cheat with the smileys and emoticons, by taking a screen shot of the ones you are interested in and inserting them as images.

I wrote up a more detailed post with screen shots Changing Fonts in Windows Live Writer

Hope this is helpful and answers your questions. I didn't answer all your questions so I can understand you won't be really happy, but hopefully this will help you to at least be happy.

Thank you ScissorMonkey.

I appreciate the really through answer. That really helped. And you really took the extra mile by putting a whole blog post and some screenshots about this. Really helpful, thank you.

Windows Live Writer actually does have the ability to change font size, type, etc...   Just go to the Format Menu and select Fonts.

If you want to add emoticons, there are plugins at:

I found a way to use WLinstaller behind proxy and described it as first post of my blog Smiley find it here... http://octahedron.wordpress.com
