The beta version of Windows Live Writer dropped this past Friday, and today we bring you a walkthrough with the man in charge, J.J. Alaire. This latest Microsoft tool for bloggers has lit a fire over at Techmeme, and we're certainly very excited to start using it at 10.

Live Writer is being built to play nice with just about everyone's blogging platform, though this first beta focuses on compatibility with Live Spaces, Blogger, LiveJournal, Typepad, and Wordpress (as if that list doesn't already have you covered). Go grab the Live Writer download now and help bring blogging out of the in-browser dark ages.

Hey, and it works with dasBlog too.

Check out the cool Flickr and Tagging plug-ins that Tim wrote...

I'm a big fan of the Flickr one and I think I'll try my hand and writing one of my own tonight!

This does have some cool WYSIWYG features to it and does make it easy to format posts to your liking. It does not allow you to work with any plug-ins that you may have installed, but this probably could be coded as a plug-in for Live Writer and give bloggers the ability to control any plug-ins they may have on their blog. Plug-ins to control plug-ins!?! Does that make sense? The idea is sound though and I really like the concept. It is basically like having a word processor like MS Word to assist you in formatting posts for the web.

I can see how this would make general posting to a blog very easy and convenient. After spending a little time with it I was quite impressed with the feature set for the Beta release. The spell check, image formatting and Live Local features are a very nice touch in my opinion and I can see how I would be able to use this along with the additional publishing features of my blog to make posting a bit more convenient. I look forward to seeing what progress is made with this application in the future and what kind of plug-ins for specific types of blogs; Wordpress, Blogger, etc. are developed to work with Live Writer.

Thats cool! And I'm sure it will support even more with future releases and updates...

Actually, I'm sure it supports way more blog services than they say... it supports both the Metaweblog API and the Movable Type API and between the two of those you should be covering a huge number of blog engines. I was pretty surprised, given the Live team's track record (Messenger and Windows Live Mail Desktop both have features that support Spaces only, instead of making it more generic and open) I figured it would be a Spaces only product.

It even supports two standards I don't even really know anything about, RSD (Really Simple Discoverability) and the newMediaObject API... great stuff. I think I'll add RSD support into my personal blog, and maybe support the newMediaObject API here on on10.net!

Your geekiness knows no bounds man. Also, I dispute your indirect assertion that you do now, or ever have, worn a tie.
